Telekom Posts Loss Of RM165.8 Million For Q3 '08 Due To Exceptional Items


KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- Telekom Malaysia, which reported a loss after tax and minority interests of RM165.8 million for the third quarter ended Setpember 30, 2008, says the profit-after tax and minority interests (PATAMI) would have been RM176.4 million for the period under review, if not for exceptional items.

The company said that it experienced certain exceptional costs such as a significant unrealised translation loss on foreign currency borrowings, realisation of foreign translation loss on disposal of telecommunications firm Sotelgui in Guinea and prior years volume commitment charges.

Revenue dropped 3.1 percent to RM2.062 billion from RM2.128 billion mainly due to lower revenue from voice services resulting from lower usage while the pre-tax loss amounted to RM138.116 million from a pre-tax profit of RM276.459 million.

"Higher revenue from broadband services mitigated the decline in voice revenue," the company said in a statement here Tuesday.

Group chief executive officer, Datuk Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, said that TM continued to see broadband as the key growth driver.

For Q3, broadband registered a growth of 24.6 percent to RM390.6 million from Q3 in 2007 arising from continued growth of broadband customers to 1.55 million from 1.18 million before.

"With the implementation of High Speed Broadband (HSSB), there would be potential for a host of products and services that we can offer, especially on the retail front," he said.

Zamzamzairani said that the global financial crisis has had a significant impact on TM's results, particularly the foreign currency translation on the company's US$1.1 billion bonds.

"The fluctuation in foreign currency is expected to continue to impact TM's results for this year," he added.

TM is projecting a revenue growth of one to 2.5 percent for next year under its key performance indicator targets and a 2-3 percent growth in 2011 while its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margin for 2009 and 2011 is estimated from low to mid 30 percent.

The EBITDA margin was based on a higher business cost, primarily direct cost such as HSBB-enabled services like IPTV, business process outsourcing expansion to the region such as call centers in Indonesia and ICT expansion into domestic enterprise and government segments.

TM posts Q3 net loss

Telekom Malaysia anticipates a weaker profit marginfrom 2009 to 2011 as it spends more on content and equipment when itlaunches more value-added servicesTELEKOM Malaysia Bhd (4863)reported its first quarterly net loss in almost three years yesterday,but the country's dominant fixed-line operator expects to reboundquickly.

  The company expects sales to grow by as much as 2.5 per cent next year, and three per cent in 2011.

"In the fixed-line business, registering any kind of growth is a goodthing," TM group chief executive officer Datuk Zamzamzairani Mohd Isasaid in a telephone interview yesterday.

It anticipates aweaker profit margin from 2009 to 2011 as it spends more on content andequipment when it launches more value-added services like InternetProtocol-TV, video conferencing and file sharing.
"Higher costs aremainly due to the launch of new services. We are building thefoundation for TM to grow," Zamzamzairani explained.

The company made a net loss of RM165.8 million in the third quarter toSeptember 30 2008, due mainly to RM195.7 million foreign exchange losson its US dollar bonds and RM88.8 million loss from the sale of itstelecommunications investment in the Republic of Guinea.

Chieffinancial officer Datuk Bazlan Osman said that of the US$1.1 billion(RM3.9 billion) bond due in tranches from 2010, only about US$150million (RM537 million) was hedged.

  The company is in talks with various financial institutions, on ways to minimise its exposure risks.

  "In the current market situation, it is not easy to hedge," Bazlan explained.

The ringgit has fallen 11 per cent against the US dollar in the lastsix months, which increases local companies' cost of foreign-currencyloans.

Bazlan said TM would be profitable in the fourth quarterof this year if the greenback did not strengthen significantly againstthe ringgit.

One of the key drivers for growth from 2009onwards will be the 10-year RM11.3 billion national high-speedbroadband project (HSBB).

  TM will start work, connecting high-impact areas with fibre optic cables, by the end of first quarter 2009.

Thefirst service rollout for the wholesale segment will be launched in thesecond quarter, while consumers will be offered the service by thefourth quarter.

  Broadband services will be the key to TM's survival as people prefer using their mobile phone than a fixed-line phone.

TM's fixed-line voice revenue in the nine months ended September 30declined 11.7 per cent to RM3.3 billion. In contrast, its broadbandbusiness showed no signs of slowing down, posting a 24.6 per cent risein revenue to RM1.1 billion.

"Malaysia's household penetrationfor broadband is still at an infancy stage. We foresee the demand willcontinue to grow," Zamzamzairani said.

Nevertheless, TM remainscommitted to its dividend policy of returning at least RM700 million or90 per cent of net profit to shareholders, whichever is higher, thisfinancial year.

Next year, it will return "excess of surplus cash" to shareholders.
