TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd, the nation’s biggest fixed-line phone operator,slumped the most in a decade on the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange onconcern the company’s dividend payout will fall next year.

Kuala Lumpur-based Telekom retreated 51 sen, or 15 per cent, to RM2.79at the 5 pm close, the biggest decline since September 1998. The stockwas today’s worst performer on the benchmark share index.

Telekom, posting its first quarterly loss in almost three years, failedto specify dividend payout targets for 2009 at an analyst briefingtoday, triggering concern about payments to shareholders in the face offinancial market turmoil and a slowing global economy.

“It’snot as good as a guarantee,” said Clare Chin, senior investment analystat CLSA Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd, who kept her “outperform” ratingon the stock. “It gives some room for uncertainty so the comfort zoneis no longer there.”
Telekom said yesterday it’s committed to its“current year” dividend, which will give shareholders a minimum ofRM700 million (US$195 million). Speaking to analysts today, the companydidn’t repeat the policy for 2009, instead saying it would giveinvestors excess cash in coming years, analysts said.

MerrillLynch & Co today cut its rating on the company to “underperform”from “neutral” and lowered its share price estimate to RM2.95 fromRM3.20.

“The fall is related to ambiguities related to nextyear’s dividend,” Vincent Khoo, head of research at AseambankersMalaysia Bhd in Kuala Lumpur, said about the share drop. Khoo today cuthis rating on Telekom to “hold” from “trading buy.” - Bloomberg

馬電訊末季或走軟
（吉隆坡）馬電訊（TM,4863,主板貿服組）今年第三季因馬幣走貶而蒙受巨額外匯虧損，分析員認為，這只是“紙上虧蝕”，預計美元會走弱，馬幣兌美元匯率今年平均為3.35令吉，大部份虧損料在近期收復失地。
儘管第三季蒙受1億6600萬令吉凈虧損，但馬電訊在今年首9個月的核心凈利仍符合市場預測，惟預計今年末季會走軟。
不過，整體財測並沒有顯著改變，因美元今年末季料回軟，對公司有利。
達證券認為，此公司在2008財政年取獲7億4400萬令吉凈利是可期的，因至今已獲得7億1700萬令吉的累積盈利。
馬電訊在第三季蒙受1億9570萬令吉的鉅額外匯虧損，逆轉前兩季取獲4470萬令吉外匯賺益的局勢，令市場深感擔憂。外匯虧損主要來自美元貸款的兌換虧損（馬幣在這期間貶值5.3%）以及脫售SOTELGUI凈資產蒙受8880萬令吉的外匯虧損。
