Personal Loan

Banking competition hots up in Malaysia

July 12 2007

MALAYSIAN banks, flush with cash which needs to generate revenue, have begun aggressively wooing consumers to borrow money in a variety of ways with attractive offers.

A spontaneous consumer lending war has broken out, it seems, among financial institutions, many of which are also credit card issuers, as they seek to outdo one another undercutting on rates and offering unique loan packages.

In recent weeks, more financial institutions have taken out full-page advertisements in the media publicising their offers as the war hots up.

And after a long time, consumers are beginning to be spoilt for choice.

Bankers themselves are divided over whether the trend is healthy, given their belief that the market itself is already overcrowded.

Today's competition among the local players to rope in consumers is defying the fundamentals of banking.

Banks traditionally borrow short (from the money market), lend long and make money from the interest rate spread.

While the lending period generally remains the same, their competition in cutting rates could be detrimental to long-term margins.

Analysts, however, said that while the tough competition has depressed rates, banks are not necessarily on the losing end.

What the banks lose in terms of interest income, they make good by increasing the volume of loans, the analysts said. In short, by making their products cheaper, banks hope to attract more customers and in the end still make net gains.

They added that banks may generally have to absorb some costs only during the first few years after the disbursement of the loans.

"Remember, home loans are usually long tenures, so banks do still make money," said one analyst.

SJ Securities head of research Cheah King Yoong, who analyses the banking industry, said that banks' net interest income would definitely be affected by the rate cuts.

However, as banks these days have more diversified income streams, lower income from loan growth would not be that significant.

He added that the slower loan growth in the first six months of this year, at about five to six per cent compared with double-digit growth last year, has left banks with little choice but to offer attractive rates for loans.

He said the outlook for the banking sector in Malaysia remains good, and expects loan growth to pick up in the second half period, led by loans to small- and medium-scale enterprises and the construction sector.

Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Manap Abdul Wahab said competition is good, especially for consumers, but for a smaller bank like his, it is not easy.

"We cannot target the bigger overall general market, so we have to focus on our niche market; and here, we hope that when people look for Islamic home financing, we become their brand of choice," he said when met yesterday.

HSBC Bank Malaysia Bhd general manager (personal financial services) U Chen Hock has a different point of view.

I hope banks are sensible ... not just use prices to gain market share to the detriment of the market because there is a minimum cost of doing business."

He said such competition in a market that is already overcrowded will ultimately depress banks' margins.

Consumers, he added, should not look at merely the interest rate factor as there are others that affect borrowing cost.

HSBC is one bank that has been promoting its Home Smart Package for a few years now, which aims at shortening the cost and loan repayment period by 50 per cent.

What has contributed to this surge of competitiveness apart from the obvious adage, "Competition is part of business"?

High liquidity in the market, high level of funds in the banks, too many mortgage players and increasing number of Islamic banking players have all been cited as some of the key factors.

"Banks need to diversify risks. Consumer lending, compared to the corporate sector, is more attractive due to the increasing consumer wealth and purchasing power, and this offers a new area of growth for banks," said U.

SJ Securities' Cheah said that with banks having too much cash, coupled with high liquidity in the market, bankers must maximise the opportunity by placing out more loans.

He added that this competition was pretty much within the industry's expectation due to the current interest rate environment.

This, he noted, will not have an adverse impact on the outlook for the banking sector, which he expects to remain strong.

"There is really nothing wrong with banks competing to offer the best rates, the best financing package, and customers who are feeling the pinch of inflation should take advantage of this," said another analyst.

Bank Muamalat's Abdul Manap said that with banks advertising their offers of "five per cent interest rate for five years, the time is now to apply for loans, but you've got to read the fine print."

updated:2007-07-13 11:34:02 MYT

20-08-2007: AEON Credit to ‘localise’ via listing

KUALA LUMPUR: AEON Credit Service (M) Bhd, which is expected to list on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia by year-end, believes that "localisation" will strengthen customers’ confidence in the company, its managing director Kuroda Naruhito said.

Following the footsteps of its sister companies in Thailand and Hong Kong, AEON Credit was practising a policy of "localisation" by listing itself on the local stock market, he said.

"We need to show our presence. The listing on the local market has become our business plan. After listing, we become more transparent and consumers will have more confidence in us," Kuroda told The Edge Financial Daily.

Recently, AEON Credit announced that it had received the Securities Commission’s approval for its proposed listing.

Earlier this year, Kuroda was reported as saying that the company was expecting a net profit growth of over 50%, while its revenue would grow from about RM650 million up to RM1 billion for its financial year ending Feb 28, 2008.

Kuroda said he could not reveal details on its proposed listing exercise at the moment.

He added that AEON Credit also could not provide any targets as the company was currently in a "sensitive period" prior to its proposed listing exercise.

The company is believed to have appointed Commerce International Merchant Bankers Bhd as the underwriter for its intial public offering.

Kuroda said AEON Credit was expecting a "positive boost" to its business following the government servants’ salary increase this year and it also wanted to get more customers from rural areas.

"According to our experiences, there are many customers for easy payment schemes in small towns and rural areas," he added.

The non-bank finance company, which is a subsidiary of AEON Credit Service Ltd in Japan, offers products such as easy payment schemes, personal financing and credit cards to Malaysian consumers.

Kuroda said the company now had about 460,000 members, who were entitled to various financial schemes, of which 80,000 were AEON credit card holders and the rest AEON Xpress loyalty cards.

On top of that, AEON Credit also had a database of another 140,000 names of potential customers, he added.

Kuroda said it only launched its credit card business in October 2005 and it would be looking at balanced revenue contributions of 50% each from both segments in the future.

He said the credit card business was its parent company’s core business, which accounted for more than 90% of its revenue.

The credit card business contributes more than 80% and 50% to revenues of its sister companies in Hong Kong and Thailand, respectively. Karudo said Malaysia would follow the trend in Thailand.

To grow its business, AEON Credit also had to acquire more merchants, and it had signed up 5,300 merchants nationwide, Kuroda said.

"Every month, we are developing 30 to 40 new merchants," he added.

Kuroda said merchants that had signed up with AEON included hypermarkets such as Jaya Jusco, Carrefour, Giant and Tesco, and hardware and electronic chain shops such as Seng Heng, Best Denki, Harvey Norman and Onking.

In terms of its network, Kuroda said AEON Credit currently had a total of 25 outlets in every state except Perlis. These outlets served as contact points for customers to apply for loyalty and credit cards, and other financial schemes, he added.

Kuroda said one of the company’s strength was its swift approval process that allowed customers to secure the financing they required in as short as 15 to 30 minutes.

"Five to six years ago, it will take two to three days. Now, it is within one day," he said.

Kuroda highlighted that AEON Credit was still able to maintain an average non-performing loan (NPL) of 2.4%, which was lower than the banking industry’s average, by leveraging on its experiences in other countries.

Beside its know-how in micro financing, the company had brought in the same type of computer system used in Thailand and Hong Kong and followed a credit policy similar to those of banking operations, he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Aeon Credit Service (M) Sdn Bhd, together with major motorcycle makers, has launched the "Aeon-Xpress Motorcycle Sales Carnival" to create greater awareness among consumers of its Aeon-Xpress motorcycle easy payment scheme.

The carnival, which involved the participation of Honda, Yamaha, Modenas, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Demak and MZ via more than 500 motorcycle merchants nationwide, started yesterday and would end on Oct 31, 2007.

In a statement here yesterday, Aeon Credit said motorcycle purchases made during the promotional period with Aeon-Xpress would enjoy a free 12-month personal accident coverage plan from AON Insurance Brokers worth RM5,000 on top of the usual easy payment scheme benefits.

Moreover, the company said consumers who take up the offer would also be eligible to take part in Aeon Credit’s "Dream Catcher" contest where they stand a chance to win up to RM100,000 in cash.
It added that every RM50 financed under Aeon-Xpress would entitle the customer to one entry for the contest, which also ended on Oct 31, 2007.

“We hope that our attractive financing scheme coupled with the motorcycle sales carnival will encourage the take-up of motorcycles,” its head of sales and business development group Danny Poh said.
Poh added that the carnival had received great response from consumers previously as participating merchants nationwide had reported increase in enquiries and applications.

“We are glad to see that many consumers are choosing to own and use motorcycles as an alternative mode of transport. We will be working closely with our merchants and business partners to bring more promotions to consumers,” he said.
