SIA and Tata to form full-service Indian carrier
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/45498-sia-and-tata-to-form-full-service-indian-carrier-update.html
Publish date: Thu, 19 Sep 21:49
India’s Tata conglomerate and Singapore Airlines will form a full-service airline based in New Delhi, adding a deep-pocketed player to a fast-growing but competitive Indian aviation sector where most operators lose money.
Tata Sons said it will own 51% of the carrier and Singapore Airlines will own the remainder. Singapore Airlines said the initial outlay of US$100 million ($124 million) would be funded by the two sides in proportion to their ownership.
India last year allowed foreign airlines to own up to 49% in local carriers in an effort to bolster ailing local airlines.
After the rule change, Malaysia’s AirAsia Bhd and Tata, India’s biggest business house, announced in February a joint venture to launch a low-cost airline in India, while Abu Dhabi’s Etihad agreed in April to buy a 24% stake in India’s Jet Airways.
“It is Tata Sons’ evaluation that civil aviation in India offers sustainable growth potential,” Tata Group’s Prasad Menon, who will be the chairman of the planned carrier with Singapore Airlines, said in a statement.
Tata Airways was India’s largest airline before the government took it over in 1953 as part of its nationalisation drive following India’s independence from Great Britain, and was rebranded Air India.
In 2000, the Tatas and Singapore Airlines jointly bid for a stake in Indian Airlines, the state carrier that later merged with Air India, although rules preventing foreign airlines from investing in Indian carriers thwarted a deal.

Third time lucky? Singapore Airlines sets sights on India
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/45517-third-time-lucky-singapore-airlines-sets-sights-on-india.html?start=1
Publish date: Mon, 23 Sep 12:16
Almost 13 years after pulling the plug on its last attempt to enter the Indian market, Singapore Airlines is taking another stab at the country by again teaming up with the Tata Group as part of a broader strategic shift.
Last week, the two companies applied to set up a new New Delhi-based full-service carrier, pledging a combined US$100 million ($125 million) to get it going. This follows an unsuccessful attempt to do the same in the mid-1990s and a failed attempt to buy state-owned Air India in 2000.
The new carrier, if approved, will initially serve the 1.2 billion Indian market. Barring no political or regulatory obstacles, it could be airborne in about a year.
SIA, which will have a 49% stake in the carrier, will be banking on its success.
Intense competition on its mainline medium and long-haul markets from Gulf carriers like Emirates Airline and neighbours such as Garuda Indonesia and Malaysian Airline, and weak demand on services to Europe, means that SIA, Asia's second-biggest airline with a market value of US$10 billion, has changed course in recent years.
Sources familar with the airline's strategy say that the management, led by low-profile chief executive Goh Choon Phong, is pushing ahead with a "portfolio" strategy that revolves around increasing the company's exposure to the fast-growing Asia Pacific and the low-cost markets.
By diversifying its revenue streams and creating new ones, like the Indian joint venture, Goh and his team plans to reduce SIA's dependence on the flagship carrier over the medium term, say investors and analysts.
"They just have to address why their brand should still be at a premium. They still have a lot to do to actually get investors to be a bit more confident of their prospects," said Kristy Fong, an investment manager at Aberdeen Asset Management, which holds a stake of about 4% in SIA.
CASH POWER
Despite the near term pressure on profits, SIA's cash pile of US$4.5 billion -- the biggest among Asian airlines -- means that it has the ability to invest in existing and new airlines, the Centre for Aviation (CAPA) said in a report.
It started Scoot, a long-haul low-cost airline, last year to tap the low-fare leisure markets that SIA left behind as it focused on the premium business. Its one-third stake in short-haul LCC Tiger Airways Holdings could also potentially go up to 46.5%.
SIA bought a stake in Virgin Australia Holdings in late 2012 and increased this to 19.9%, ensuring access to the important Australian market.
Silkair, SIA's fully-owned regional subsidiary, will retire its fleet of Airbus A320s and induct new Boeing 737s over the next few years as it grows its network of Asia-Pacific services. SIA itself has ordered dozens of new Airbus A350s, and Boeing's 777-300ERs and 787-10s.
The Indian venture has its challenges. SIA must successfully chart a course around India's political and bureaucratic minefield for regulatory approval.
Under existing regulations, it must serve the domestic market for five years before it can operate international flights. Taxes and airport fees are high, and profitability rare for the country's airlines.
SIA's competitors in the full-service segment are beleaguered Air India, which survives only because of the hundreds of millions of dollars New Delhi has pumped into it, and Jet Airways , in which Etihad Airways is buying a minority stake. |

Singapore Air, Tata win initial approval to start India Airline
Publish date: Thu, 24 Oct 16:46
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/45978-singapore-air-tata-win-initial-approval-to-start-india-airline.html
Singapore Airlines, Southeast Asia’s biggest carrier, won initial approval from the Indian government to start an airline in the world’s second-most populous country with its partner Tata Group.
India’s Foreign Investment Promotion Board approved the proposal, Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram said in New Delhi today. Tata will hold 51% and Singapore Air the remainder of the venture, which still needs to procure an airline license.
Entering India will enable Singapore Air to get a foothold in a market where the number of air passengers is forecast to triple to 452 million by 2020. Asia’s third-largest economy last year permitted foreign airlines to buy stakes in local carriers, a move that brought in investments from Malaysia’s AirAsia and Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways PJSC.
Singapore Air said it’s yet to be informed of the decision by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board. The carrier is “very pleased with the reports of approval,” spokesman Nicholas Ionides said in an e-mail.
The venture will have four directors from Tata and two from Singapore Air, a government official told reporters in New Delhi, asking not to be identified citing rules. The airline would be based in the Indian capital city and its chairman would be from the Mumbai-based Tata group.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government changed laws last year to allow foreign airlines to buy as much as 49% in local companies, reversing a decade-old ban that had kept out carriers like Singapore Air from the Indian market. AirAsia, the region’s biggest budget carrier, also chose Tata, owner of the Jaguar Land Rover marque, for its venture in India. |

Singapore Airlines profit rises on passenger traffic, plane sale
Source: Bloomberg | Publish date: Tue, 12 Nov 19:02
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/46273-singapore-airlines-profit-rises-on-passenger-traffic-plane-sale.html
Singapore Airlines, Southeast Asia’s biggest carrier, posted a 78% jump in second- quarter profit after it carried more passengers and gained from the sale of aircraft and spare parts.
Net income increased to $160.6 million in the three months ended in September, from $90.1 million a year earlier, Singapore Air said in a statement today. Operating profit rose 23% to $86.9 million while sales increased 2.8% to $3.9 billion.
Singapore Air passenger numbers increased 6.3% to 4.81 million in the quarter as economic expansion in Asia stoked more travel. Chief Executive Officer Goh Choon Phong also this year ordered aircraft worth US$17 billion from Airbus SAS and Boeing Co. and revamped first- and business-class offerings in a bid to fend off competition from discount carriers and Middle East airlines expanding in the region.
Singapore Air fell 0.4% to close at $10.25 in Singapore before the earnings were released. The stock has dropped 4.7% this year, compared with a 0.4% gain for the benchmark Straits Times Index.
Singapore Air in September agreed to set up an airline in India with Mumbai-based Tata Group, owner of the Jaguar and Land Rover brands, to tap surging travel demand in the world’s second-most populous nation where the number of air passengers is forecast to triple to 452 million by 2020.
The new airline, which won initial approval from India’s Foreign Investment Promotion Board last month, will be based in capital New Delhi. Tata will hold 51% of the venture and Singapore Air the remainder.
Plane Purchase
In May, Singapore Air ordered 30 Boeing 787-10X variant planes and 30 Airbus A350-900s to replace less fuel-efficient models. The contract also included an option for 20 more A350-900s which may be converted by the carrier for purchasing the larger A350-1000 variant.
That was on top of the of the 25 Airbus aircraft worth US$7.5 billion, including five A380s, ordered in October last year.
The carrier will next week end its all-business class service from Singapore to Newark, the world’s longest non-stop flight. Direct flights between the island city and Los Angeles ceased last month.
Singapore Air faces increased competition as the alliance between Qantas Airways Ltd., Australia’s biggest, and Emirates started flights March 31. The agreement with the Dubai-based airline cuts average journey times by more than two hours from Melbourne and Sydney to the top 10 destinations in Europe.
Southeast Asia Market
To compete, Singapore Air this year raised its stake in Virgin Australia Holdings. The carrier is also the largest investor in Tiger Airways Holdings Ltd., a short-haul low-fare airline that competes with AirAsia Bhd., Lion Mentari Airlines PT and more than 10 other budget carriers that fly in the Southeast Asian region.
Scoot, a medium-haul budget airline fully owned by Singapore Air, started flying with Boeing 777 aircraft last year. Singapore Air transferred its orders for the Boeing 787 Dreamliners to Scoot.
Airlines worldwide are likely to generate a net income of US$11.7 billion this year, 7.9% smaller than a June forecast, the International Air Transport Association said in September. Airlines in Asia Pacific are projected to earn US$3.1 billion, US$1.5 billion less than earlier estimated amid slow growth in the region’s emerging economies.

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/42643/

Singapore Air's fuel hedging gains help mask drop in yields
Source: Bloomberg | Publish date: Wed, 13 Nov 10:52
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/46287-singapore-airs-fuel-hedging-gains-help-mask-drop-in-yields.html
Singapore Airlines, Southeast Asia’s biggest carrier, posted its largest quarterly profit in two years as jet-fuel hedging gains masked a drop in yields from carrying passengers and freight.
Profit from hedging jet kerosene tripled in the quarter, helping Singapore Air’s net income jump 78% from a year earlier to $160.6 million, the carrier said in a statement yesterday. Passenger yield, or the money earned from carrying travelers a kilometer, declined 3.5%.
The hedging gains helped the carrier trim spending on oil, its biggest expense, even as jet kerosene prices rose for the first time in four quarters. Chief Executive Officer Goh Choon Phong this year ordered US$17 billion ($21 billion) of new, fuel-efficient aircraft from Airbus SAS and Boeing Co. in a bid to fend off competition from carriers such as Emirates and AirAsia Bhd. that are expanding across Asia.
“It was a positive surprise on the net level with gains from associated companies and fuel hedging,” said Andrew Orchard, an analyst at CIMB Group Holdings in Hong Kong. “But on the operational side, there are still some concerns with yields remaining soft.”
Singapore Air earned $52.1 million from hedging oil in the quarter, compared with a $17.3 million gain in the year-earlier quarter, the carrier said in the statement.
The shares rose rose 0.8% to $10.33 as of 9:43 a.m. in Singapore trading today, the biggest jump in almost two months. The stock has dropped 4.1% this year. Seven of 19 analysts recommend investors buy the stock, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Five say sell and seven suggest holding the stock.
SYRIA, IRAQ
Oil rose to a two-year high on Aug. 28 amid concern a U.S.- led assault would widen the Syrian conflict and disrupt Middle East supplies. Syria borders Iraq, the second-biggest crude producer in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, Bloomberg estimates show. The Middle East accounted for about 35% of global oil output in the first quarter of this year, according to the International Energy Agency.
Jet fuel swaps in Singapore gained 3% in the quarter ended Sept. 30 to US$121 ($151) a barrel, according to data compiled from PVM Oil Associates, a London-based broker.
The carrier has hedged 60% of its fuel needs for October to March at US$118 a barrel, the company said in a statement today.
The airline’s passenger yield fell to 11 Scents in the quarter from 11.4 cents a year earlier, while cargo yield dropped to 32.1 cents from 32.7 cents.
Passenger numbers increased 6.3% to 4.81 million and the carrier packed 81.1% of available seats.
IATA FORECAST
Singapore Air’s surge in profit comes as the International Air Transport Association said in September that carriers worldwide are likely to generate a net income of US$11.7 billion this year, 7.9% smaller than a June forecast. Airlines in Asia Pacific are projected to earn US$3.1 billion, US$1.5 billion less than earlier estimated amid slow growth in the region’s emerging economies.
Contribution from associated companies such as Tiger Airways Holdings tripled in the quarter to $36.6 million, Singapore Air said. The airline posted a gain of $9.1 million in the quarter from sale of an aircraft and parts. The company will pay an interim dividend of 10 cents a share.
“Advance bookings for the coming months are projected to be higher compared to the same period last year,” Singapore Air said in the statement. “However, ongoing promotional activities necessitated by intense competition and a strong Singapore dollar are expected to place pressure on yields.”
Singapore Air in September agreed to set up an airline in India with Mumbai-based Tata Group, owner of the Jaguar and Land Rover brands, to tap surging travel demand in the world’s second-most populous nation where the number of air passengers is forecast to triple to 452 million by 2020.
PLANE ORDER
The new airline, which won initial approval from India’s Foreign Investment Promotion Board last month, will be based in capital New Delhi. Tata will hold 51% of the venture and Singapore Air the remainder.
Singapore Air faces increased competition as the alliance between Qantas Airways, Australia’s biggest, and Emirates started flights March 31. Singapore Air this year raised its stake in Virgin Australia Holdings. |

Singapore Airlines says CFO to leave in Feb
Source: Reuters | Publish date: Fri, 15 Nov 18:57
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/46348-singapore-airlines-says-cfo-to-leave-in-feb.html
Singapore Airlines said on Friday its chief financial officer, Chan Hon Chew, has resigned and will leave the city-state's flag carrier on Feb. 1, 2014.
Chan, who has been CFO since 2006, quit voluntarily to pursue other career opportunities, SIA said in a stock market filing. It did not say who would take over from Chan or when a replacement was likely to be appointed.
SIA is facing stiff competition on its medium and long-haul routes from Gulf carriers such as Emirates Airline. Premium class travel, which makes up about 40 percent of its revenue, has also been hit. |

(A Great Way to Fly)之目標。

Singapore Air's fuel hedging gains help mask drop in yields
Source: Bloomberg | Publish date: W ...
Profit from hedging jet kerosene tripled in the quarter, helping Singapore Air’s net income jump 78% from a year earlier to $160.6 million, the carrier said in a statement yesterday...
Singapore Air earned $52.1 million from hedging oil in the quarter, compared with a $17.3 million gain in the year-earlier quarter, the carrier said in the statement...
Jet fuel swaps in Singapore gained 3% in the quarter ended Sept. 30 to US$121 ($151) a barrel, according to data compiled from PVM Oil Associates, a London-based broker...
The carrier has hedged 60% of its fuel needs for October to March at US$118 a barrel, the company said in a statement today...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Profit from hedging 不是 offset the increase in the actual fuel costs 吗?为什么要说 the profit from hedging jet kerosene was helping Singapore Air’s net income jump 78% 呢?

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/42886/

Singapore Airlines is to spend $100 million on revamping its 15 airport lounges around the world, five times the amount it had originally estimated for the project.
The $20 million budget announced last year has been revised as the airline looks to set itself apart from rivals and convince premium customers that a great flight begins on the ground. |

Tata-Singapore Air venture to take off in second half of 2014
Source: Bloomberg | Publish date: Thu, 9 Jan 20:00
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/46859-tata-singapore-air-venture-to-take-off-in-second-half-of-2014.html
Singapore Airlines, Southeast Asia’s biggest carrier, and the Tata Group aim to start their joint-venture airline in the second half of this year, to tap surging air travel in world’s second-most populous nation.
The new carrier has leased 20 Airbus A320 aircraft for a tenure of 12 years, according to Sanjay Singh, a New Delhi-based spokesman for the aviation alliance. He declined to specify the cost of the planes. “We expect to be airborne in the second half of 2014. It is difficult to predict” the exact time operations will start, he said.
The alliance will enable Singapore Air to get a foothold in a market where the number of air passengers is projected to triple to 452 million by 2020. India, Asia’s third-largest economy, in 2012 permitted foreign airlines to buy as much as 49% stakes in local carriers, reversing a decade-old rule and luring investments from Malaysia’s AirAsia Bhd. -- another Tata joint venture -- and Etihad Airways PJSC of Abu Dhabi.
India’s Foreign Investment Promotion Board approved the Singapore Air-Tata proposal, Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram said in October. Tata will hold 51% and Singapore Air the rest in the New Delhi-based airline that still needs to obtain an airline license.
The Tata Group’s budget airline venture with AirAsia, Southeast Asia’s biggest budget carrier, received approval for its investment in March last year to start operations that will target smaller Indian cities out of its Chennai headquarters, AirAsia said in a Feb. 20, 2013 statement.
The twin aviation pacts by the US$100 billion ($127 billion) Tata Group last year will confront the region’s highest fuel costs, intense competition and a lack of adequate infrastructure.
Tata and Singapore Air have tried to enter Indian aviation unsuccessfully twice before. In 1994, the two had formed a venture to start an airline in India. Policy changes prevented that from starting and in 1998, Tata dropped its plan citing years of government delays. In November 2000, they teamed up to buy 40% in state-run carrier Air India that government was divesting. In September 2001, Singapore Air decided not to proceed with that plan.

Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand form alliance for NZ flights
Source: Reuters | Publish date: Thu, 16 Jan 10:31
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/46941-singapore-airlines-and-air-new-zealand-form-alliance-for-nz-flights.html
Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand have signed an agreement to form an alliance, enabling Air New Zealand to fly the Auckland-Singapore route and Singapore Airlines to operate the Airbus A380 to New Zealand.
“Subject to regulatory approvals, the carriers would aim to boost their existing capacity between Singapore and New Zealand by up to 30 percent year-round over time,” SIA and Air New Zealand said in a joint statement on Thursday. Pending the approvals, flights could commence as early as December 2014.
The tie-up is in line with SIA’s strategy to form global partnerships for its flagship premium airline to combat stiff competition from ambitious Gulf carriers such as Emirates and Etihad Airways. Last year, Australia’s Qantas Airways struck an alliance with Emirates.

http://www.nanyang.com/node/598011?tid=462
Singapore Air profit falls as one-time charges mask traffic gain
Source: Bloomberg | Publish date: Thu, 6 Feb 20:01
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/47167-singapore-air-profit-falls-as-one-time-charges-mask-traffic-gain.html
Singapore Airlines, Southeast Asia’s biggest carrier, posted a 65% decline in profit in the third quarter after charges relating to a cargo class action settlement masked an increase in passenger numbers.
Net income in the three months ended December dropped to $50.1 million, compared with $142.5 million a year earlier, the carrier said in a statement today. Sales was little changed at $3.87 billion.
Singapore Air’s settlement of a cargo class-action suit in the U.S. prompted a charge of about $80 million in the quarter, in addition to losses from associated companies such as budget airline Tiger Airways Holdings Ltd. That dented gains from carrying more passengers, a demand-growth that has prompted Chief Executive Officer Goh Choon Phong to order US$17 billion ($22 billion) of new, fuel-efficient aircraft from Airbus Group NV and Boeing Co.
“The outlook for the air transportation industry continues to be challenging,” the carrier said in the statement.

SIA and Airbus to set up $80 mil flight training JV
Source: The Edge | Publish date: Wed, 12 Feb 12:52
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/47226-sia-and-airbus-to-set-up-80-mil-flight-training-jv.html
Singapore Airlines and Airbus have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a flight training joint venture in Singapore.
The facility will be called Airbus Asia Training Centre (AATC) and will be 55%-owned by Airbus and 45%-owned by SIA. The two parties will initially contribute $80 million towards AATC. Operations are expected to begin before the end of 2014.
The Singapore centre will initially operate from the SIA Training Centre near Changi Airport before moving to Seletar Aerospace Park when a dedicated facility is completed. It will provide type rating and recurrent training on full-flight simulators for Airbus A320, A330, A340, A350 and A380 aircraft types.
“Demand for air travel is forecast to continue growing steadily in the Asia-Pacific region and the joint venture will help the industry keep pace with training requirements,” said Singapore Airlines CEO, Goh Choon Phong.
“The partnership makes good business sense for Singapore Airlines, while also enhancing Singapore’s position as a leading aviation hub. The experience of Singapore Airlines’ instructor pilots combined with Airbus’ own expertise will ensure that AATC is a centre of excellence, providing a significant boost to the region’s pilot training capabilities.”
Airbus President and CEO Fabrice Brégier said: “We are pleased to partner with SIA on this important new joint venture. This state-of-the-art facility will offer full pilot training services to Airbus operators from across the region and is a major step in the further expansion of our global flight training services. The investment underscores Airbus’ strategy to offer innovative solutions to our customers for the entire Airbus fleet.”
AATC will be the newest in a network of Airbus training centres around the world, others being at Beijing, Miami and Toulouse.
