UPDATE 5: Demonstrations in Bangkok
09 December 2013
Dear Travel Partners,
The days prior to the weekend (including the public holiday on Dec 5) were quite peaceful in Bangkok city and in the provinces of Thailand, with only a small number of protestors. However, the situation changed since yesterday, when Protest Leader Mr. Suthep Thaugsuban issued an ultimatum for the government to resign and pass the power to a non-elected "People's Council" no later than today, Monday 9 December 2014.
Today, Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra says she will dissolve the parliament and call for an election. All is peaceful in Bangkok but traffic is at a stand-still in some areas due to the demonstrations. The anti-government protestors insist that do not want new elections, instead they want to have a so-called "People's Council" in power. Therefore it's quite unsure how this will continue over the next days. Around 200,000 protestors are expected today in several rallies in Bangkok.
Most offices are closed today in Bangkok. Focus Asia is able to do all scheduled transfers but we will not operate any Bangkok tours today and tomorrow. Tomorrow is another public holiday in Thailand and all offices will remain closed.
In the Provinces:
Tens of thousands of anti-government demonstrators rallied in several provinces on Monday in support of the protest in the capital, where huge numbers of protesters converged to uproot the "Thaksin Regime". Protesters in Surat Thani, Trang, Chumphon, Nakhon Ratchasima, Pattani, Yala, Phitsanulok, Phayao and Chon Buri provinces came to life after Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra announced the dissolution of the House of Representatives this morning.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the rallies, and will continue to update you of any changes. If you have any queries or require more detailed information regarding this topic, please contact your Sales Manager in charge.
Sincerely,
Your Focus Asia Team
