1MDB’s RM1.38 billion Penang land quandary

Heavily indebted 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) has landed itself with a RM1.38 billion problem – what to do with the more than 234 acres (95ha) of land it bought in Penang just six days before GE13 last year.

The latest issue of The Edge weekly (pic) in a cover story reported that the land deals appear to have been done in a haste and were a plan devised by a group of businessmen close to Barisan Nasional (BN) to use the promise of building 9,999 units of low-cost and affordable housing on the land as a strategy to oust the Pakatan Rakyat from the seat of government.

But the move failed and 1MDB is stuck with the various plots of land which come with encumbrances like having between 1,200 and 1,400 ground tenants – people who don't own the land but own the building on the land – who have stayed there for more than 40 years.



The weekly also said 1MDB might have overpaid for the land located around Air Itam town, making it unlikely that it could make money even if it were to go ahead with the plan to build the low-cost and affordable homes. – September 20, 2014.
