政府计划明年后年报废20年旧车

PETALING JAYA: The government intends to implement the end-of-vehicle-life (EVL) policy in 2015 or 2016 with the initial target of scrapping vehicles of 20 years or older. According to a report in Nanyang Siang Pau today, the authorities concerned have already approached the relevant parties, including vehicle part recyclers, on the implementation of the policy. The relevant parties will also visit Japan to get the latest knowhow in the automotive recycling industry. Malaysia Automotive Recyclers Association president Gwee Bok Wee told the daily the government intends to implement the EVL policy in stages starting next year or the year after, depending on market response. It is not the first time the government intends to implement the policy. "Its plan to implement the EVL policy was scrapped some years back due to strong public objections. The policy is good for the protection of our environment but the majority of the public are not educated about its benefits," said Gwee. He said the association, which is working with Malaysian Automotive Institute on the policy's feasibility, has proposed that for starters, the government scrap vehicles of 20 years or older. "In some countries, the scrapping of old vehicles is mandatory. We recommend that in Malaysia, motorists be given the option, meaning they will have their old cars scrapped on a voluntary basis. "Owners of vehicles aged 20 and above can choose to go for the yearly free inspection, which is aimed at raising their vehicle safety awareness." Gwee said once motorists have a higher level of motor safety awareness, they will choose to scrap their vehicles when they are unable to meet safety requirements. "The policy will help towards protecting the environment. First, reusable parts can be refurbished and recycled. Second, the scrap metal can be recycled to obtain raw material for the production of new vehicles," he said.
