University of the People (UoPeople) is the world’s first non-profit, tuition-free, accredited, online academic institution dedicated to opening access to higher education globally. University of the People (UoPeople) is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), USA since February 2014. UoPeople is approved to operate by the State of California and is approved by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) to award degrees.
Academic Entry Requirements:
1) Applicants must be 18 years or older.
2) Applicants must be proficient in English as all courses and materials are in English
3) Applicants must prove high school completion through the submission of a high school diploma and transcripts. The diploma and transcripts may be in a language other than English provided the applicant submits, in addition, an official translation document that is notarized prior to submittal.
4) At this time, due to US regulatory requirements, University of the People is unable to accept applications for admission from applicants residing in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, and Maryland**

Do relevant specializations courses count towards the degree?

Hello all,
Currently there is a start of data mining specialization courses of University of Illinois on Coursera as well, several courses are overlapped with those in curriculum. Are they content-equivalent, i.e. would you admit the credits in that specialization courses if completeing them?

Thank you for your question and apologies in the delay following up.
From the Admissions team at Illinois:
Each of the eight courses required for the MCS-DS takes place over the 15 weeks of a semester, though some courses may not take all 15 weeks. Each course consists of two MOOCs (each typically 4-6 weeks) that represent the lectures and some assignments for the course, as well as a high-engagement (HE) component of the course. This HE component represents what is needed beyond the two MOOCs to represent effort commensurate with University of Illinois credit toward a graduate degree. As a baseline, it represents the direct oversight of faculty and TA’s on coursework, to provide guidance and feedback on assignments, and at least one hour per week of office hours. The HE component may require additional assignments and/or exams, and can also involve faculty/TA grading and feedback on the MOOC assignments. We strive to ensure that work performed in a MOOC does not have to be redone for the HE component if the MOOC is taken before the HE portion of the course. As course material evolves and is updated to track new industry developments and trends, we cannot guarantee that MOOC assignments will not change before the HE portion is taken, but we do make a good faith effort to avoid such changes when possible.

Hi Amy,
Thanks for your detailed explanation.
Here is what I understand, please correct me if I misunderstand anything.
In MCS-DS program, other than the MOOC courses, HE parts as well are highly addressed with additional work and training. And this is not included in the Specialisation courses. Therefore, although the courses are partly similar or course name is literally equal, courses between MCS-DS program and the Specialisation courses are still not content-equivalent.
Also a few more questions:
So, if I take both the specialisation and am admitted to MCS-DS program, do I still need to take same course twice, e.g. data visualisation?
Fees for specialisation and MCS-DS program are totally separated, right?

Hi Yao-Chia,
To add to what Amy wrote -
1) If you have previously completed the specializations, any assignments that were only peer or auto graded for the Coursera MOOC courses can be submitted later to the high-engagement component. These will be considered by the faculty and staff to satisfy the partial requirements of the credit bearing courses. However, please note that Amy's message says that we cannot guarantee that MOOC assignments will not change before the HE portion is taken.
2) If a specialization was completed in a term prior to being enrolled as a degree-seeking student, degree-seeking students will be assessed tuition for the HE portion. So yes, you would have then been assessed specialization fees and also the HE tuition. If you are enrolled as a degree-seeking student and taking the MOOC courses during that process, tuition will be all inclusive.

What are the specific prerequisite courses for acceptance into the MSCS program for someone without a computer science or technical undergraduate degree in STEM?
Answer: There are no specific courses that you'll need as prerequisites to apply to this program. Applicants must have sufficient background in computer programming as well as data structures and algorithms. The recommended undergraduate GPA for applicants applying to the Professional Master's program is a 3.2/4.0 or higher.
Applied Linear Math or Abstract Linear Algebra; Calculus through Calculus III; Probability Theory or Statistics and Probability are good basics to have. There will be three STAT courses offered in this program: Statistical Programming (FA16), Multivariate Analysis (FA17), and Statistical Learning (SP18).

我的天吖！咱原本就看到明明就是硕士课程来的，经旧同事一说没有学士文凭根本就无法报读硕士课程... 怎么现在重新阅读了一下才知道原来真的是该学院开放的硕士课程，（无论有无学士文凭都可以报读，只是建议有统计学背景就容易修读）！！
不过暂时也无法支付平均每个月MYR1333的学费，得过几个月才报读下一季的开学... 9月的恐怕暂时无法赶得及，可能是得报读明年1月的开学期吧（咱目前才找到份工作月薪随MYR4000而已，但尽量省吃俭用，希望九月前可以先换掉一些信用卡债后，九月比较没那么拮据后可以支付每月1333学费，在五年内获取硕士文凭 ）... 而人民大学的开源学士课程咱也报读了，因为学习不一样的知识... 边学硕士课程的边复习一些学士基本功
边工作边修读学士兼硕士课程，下班和假日可以多阅读和自修些编程与统计学，加快学习速度... 在自个儿编写自个儿的网站也比较得心应手，而且还学业上的Assignment和研究论文上，直接科研咱的体育赔率建模和投资风险管理模式，有教授们鉴定才容易上手且不会使用错误的程式...  ～

The MCS-DS is one of our "professional masters" programs:

These programs are designed to be terminal and intended for students seeking only a masters degree. They are based on coursework and projects and do not include a masters thesis. If you want a masters degree designed for research that would better prepare you for the possibility of pursuing a later Ph.D., then I would recommend a Masters of Science (M.S.) in CS, such as:

1)As Illinois provides opportunity to pursue Phd after graduation does it also counts the MCS-DS towards Phd?
2)Is there any chance for the students to enroll for thesis at Illinois after completion of MCS-DS

前几天将多年前的科研结果辑写成研究论文... Odds Modelling and Testing Inefficiency of Sports-Bookmakers Apr-2008 to Apr-2010（在以下CV的其中一个科研项目，也是首个项目代表作）

不过多年前就知道压力非常大，因为要编写个实时采集数据和实时计算的API非常困难（还要如4lowin2一样，不止一家公司），而且咱以前都只是用Access而已，MySQL还没学习... 还有ShinyApp和网络服务器都压根儿就是初学者，还有许许多多的Rcpp、Javascript和noSQL、Spark、RHadoop全都还没学习... 学习能力没有小时候厉害（小时了了，大未必佳）～
Rcpp、Javascript、SQL、Web Driver都是列入必须学的范围，否则网站根本就无法运行，而最主打的统计学还只是个初学者（因为该文献还需要添加个truncate distribution缩小大比分的机率，还要继续修改，可能需要添加且测试其它因素 --- 自变量），许多书籍阅读了后几个月就忘了（记忆越来越差，领悟力也一样、就连之前科研的都忘了许多还得复习... 又找不到志同道合的数据科学/统计学背景的朋友一块儿科研）～

否则五年内获得硕士学位后还可以再继续深造个BOSS博士学位，哈哈～），多个月前睁眼说瞎话四处打广告说无须学士文凭！！！还有另一个已报名的专业文凭（需考完所有6科）16-May-2016就该开课了，都迟了两天两夜了... 这就是百年学府应有的职业操守、大势打广告、虚张声势、雷声大雨点小甚至货不对版？！得推迟几年在继续学习了...
