Currently out on a $20,000 bail, Singapore’s newest enfant terrible, 17-year-old Amos Yee, is turning to the general public for donations to see him through his impending trial. Claiming in his April 14, 2015 blog post to have only $70 left in his bank account, Yee said his parents are neither willing nor able to pay for the costs incurred by his court case. Yee is facing three charges for 1) his deliberate intention to wound the religious or racial feelings of a person, 2) circulating obscene material on his blog and making threatening and 3) for making abusive or insulting communication that is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress, However, his latest blog posting appears to be a clear violation of the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s request for him to not communicate any messages electronically during this period his case is taking place. From The Straits Times March 31, 2015: Deputy Public Prosecutor Hon Yi asked that Yee, whose $20,000 police bail was extended, not post, upload or otherwise distribute any comment or content, whether directly or indirectly, online while his current case is ongoing.
Here is his blog post asking for donations: I’ve already saved up a considerable amount of money by insisting that I’d only have lawyers who are able to represent me, pro bono. But unfortunately, there is still the inevitable cost of court fees, bail money all the nitty-gritties that makes a trial notoriously expensive, lawyers excessively rich and something that the common folk would never wish to touch with a 8-foot pole. However in my case, being the highly subversive, iconoclast that I am, these would probably be inevitable. I’ve estimated that I require and aim to raise $30000 to continue indulging in this endeavor adeptly. Right now, my budget for food has always ran out, I’m currently living off the $70 left in my bank account, and the food that people graciously provided to me free-of-charge, because they are fans. So it would be relatively apt to infer that I probably am unable to afford the items and resources that surrounds a court case.
