GEORGE TOWN, Nov 29, 2015: The Penang Chief Minister’s post should be held by the state party chairman, Chow Kon Yeow, and not party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who does not have any state post in the ruling party, DAP. A party delegate, Shamser Singh Thind, from Chai Leng Park, said the mandate to be CM should be given to someone from Penang, preferably the grassroots and not an outsider instead. Lim, who had been an elected representative in Malacca previously, was born in Johor. “It is only fair for someone from Penang to lead the people of Penang and for Penang people to decide who to lead them,” he said to thunderous applause in the hall at the Equatorial Hotel during the debate session at the Penang DAP State Ordinary Convention today. He also proposed for the process of committee member election be changed as it did not give full powers to the grassroots to elect their leaders like in the recent Dapsy election. “For example, the majority had chosen (Puchong MP) Gobind Singh Deo in Selangor but (Petaling Jaya Utara MP) Tony Pua, who was placed eighth, was chosen as chairman. “The same thing happened in Perak.” Shamser then went on to quote the late Karpal Singh’s in saying that there were no permanent friends and foes in politics and asked why DAP was still clinging on to PAS in Selangor when in Penang there was the Pakatan Harapan government made up of the newly-minted Parti Amanah Negara (PAS ), DAP and PKR. “Now it looks like there are four parties in Pakatan Harapan. Is it hard for DAP to let go of its old flame? ” he asked. “This is because in Selangor, the Pakatan Rakyat government comprise four parties, which are the DAP with 15 seats, PKR with 13 seats, PAS with 13 seats and Amanah with two seats. “Not only that, three of the state excos are from PAS. “Why is DAP still sleeping with its now enemy PAS after the divorce? “ Shamser also brought up the recent debacle during the state legislative assembly sitting. During the sitting, the Penang state assembly rejected the motion proposed by BN-Pulau Betong assemblyman Muhamad Farid Saad, who suggested that all coastal land reclamation projects in the state should be subjected to public debate. Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang rejected the proposal after 23 assembly members voted against it, with 10 supporting the motion and five abstaining from voting. Those who abstained were Cheah Kah Peng (PKR-Kebun Bunga), Ong Chin Wen (PKR-Bukit Tengah), Dr Norlela Ariffin (PKR-Penanti), Lee Khai Loon (PKR-Machang Bubuk) and Dr T. Jayabalan (PKR-Batu Uban). Additionally, DAP’s Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu tendered his resignation letter as the Penang DAP state organising secretary effective Monday. This came after Teh decided to resign over his support of the BN motion. Shamser also questioned the DAP-led state government, especially Lim, for reprimanding those who supported BN’s motion. “From my understanding, in Penang, a state assemblyman from Pakatan Harapan cannot support or abstain a motion by the Opposition. “But Pakatan Harapan still hopes the MPs from Barisan Nasional support the vote of no confidence towards (Prime Minister Datuk Seri) Najib Razak. “If it is the duty of the state assemblymen from Pakatan Harapan to object to all of Barisan Nasional’s motions, I wish to ask how come there was not even one MP from Pakatan who objected to the increase in monthly salary of MPs in Parliament?”.gif)
