The suspect is a 17-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan, a so-called "underage unaccompanied refugee" who immigrated into Germany in 2015 and lived in the home of a family in Freiburg, which was also questioned after his arrest. The suspect will be charged under juvenile criminal law, which means, he can receive a maximum jail term of 10 years, including the deportation. The deportation can only be executed, when the underage refugee can be handed over to relatives or a protectory, which is rarely the case.

"This is exactly what liberal and open-to-the-world people of Freiburg had feared," said the local paper in a comment about the on-line venom now coirculating against all refugees.
The BZ daily in Berlin said neo-Nazis were "rubbing their hands with glee" at Maria's fate, adding; "This terrible case is a perfect incentive for their propaganda: every refugee is a potential criminal and terrorist! What else? It is a disgusting, characterless reaction."

I am in Germany at the moment. The major media have not covered this story except for one newspaper. The Afghan is also suspected of other rapes. Merkel was defending her immigration policy to CDU members just the other day, refusing to listen to criticism and claiming hers was the only way; only the implementation needed fine tuning. There were also major incidents at Munich's annual city hall party for teenagers, which were covered up for several weeks till it leaked.
Meanwhile Italy and others are still ferrying in migrants by the boatloads. In the wake of this latest attack, now it has gone public, the media and usual suspects are in their familiar spin of the need for more integration and understanding (Merkel told Germans they need to approach the migrants, experts advised people here to learn Arabic etc.), the boy was traumatised, society is racist etc. Imagine the outcry had a white man done this to a migrant woman; the talkshows would be running full on.

I am living in Berlin and what really shocks me is that we hardly have any media coverage on this topic!!! It's like the press and the government want to surpress any critical views towards Merkel's open-door policy. I am by no means a conspiracy loon, but I get the feeling that our press is being manipulated - at least when it comes to this topic. It makes me question what kind of democracy we are living in and I urge the foreign press to draw attention to the MANIPULATION of the GERMAN PRESS by our government (MERKEL).

There is hardly any coverage here in Germany about this crime. Some newspapers cover it - but kind of reluctantly. It's like the sexual assaults on New Year's Eve in Cologne. Media only started to cover it because the story got leaked on social networks.
