Brand building focal point of Voir

Updated : 08-10-2007
Media : The Star

VOIR Holdings Bhd plans to continue focusing on brand building and quality products for growth.

The group is en route to a listing on the second board of Bursa Malaysia this month.

It¡¦s various in-house brands have come a long way since the late 1970s, when the founder Seow Khim Soon and his mother began their retailing business with their own brand, Voir.

Managing director Ham Hon Kit said a strong brand was essential to ensure continued success and acceptance, as it would be able to reflect an image that differentiated it from the rest.

¡§We believe strong brand, product quality, wide distribution network at strategic locations, competitive pricing and skilled management team are the criteria to bring the us to a higher level,¡¨ he told StarBiz in an interview.

Despite the rising competition in the apparel industry due to more international brands coming to Malaysia, the group had managed to withstand the competition and also internationalised its brands, Ham said.

Voir is an investment holding company whose subsidiaries are involved in designing, developing, branding, marketing and retailing 14 in-house fashion labels. It is also a licensed distributor for international labels Diadora and Chiemsee.

The group retails a comprehensive range of products including ladies', men's and children's apparel as well as ladies' accessories, eyewear, inner wear and shoes.

Its in-house brands include Voir, Voir Shoez, Voir Inner Wear, Soda, Soda Exchange, Soda Kids, POP Soda, Applemints, South China Sea, Noir and G&H.

Ham said that its Voir range of products was the largest contributor (40%) to the group's total revenue, followed by Soda, which accounted for 26%.

¡§Fashion is always evolving, so we have to always reinvent ourselves to ensure that we are in tune with what the target customers want. Usually the consumers worldwide are going for brands. Branded products give them confidence, happiness and satisfaction,¡¨ Ham said.

Voir's products cater to consumers ranging from three years old up to 30 and above.

When it comes to brand building, he stressed that it was important for the company to instil the brand starting with the young.

This is because with early branding exposure, children will remember the brand when they grow up. In addition, children nowadays are also embracing brands and they want to be associated with popular brands, he explained.

¡§Our business is dependant on the perception of consumers towards our brands. Consumers buy products of established brands due to factors closely associated with the labels like design, quality and price,¡¨ he said.

Therefore, the group has a quality control process to ensure all products meet its required standard. It will also continue to invest in brand equity through advertising and marketing activities to enhance its brand visibility.

On the manufacturing operations, Ham said the group, which adopts a multi-brand strategy, relied on its buying houses and agent factories for consistent supply of quality merchandise.

He said this would minimise its operational costs, as it did not need to bear fixed manufacturing and maintenance costs.

¡§We believe that the risk of over dependence on our existing buying houses is minimal, as we source from a wide network of reliable buying houses,¡¨ Ham said.

Currently, the group has numerous buying houses and agent factories in China and India.

By outsourcing its manufacturing functions, the group is able to price its products competitively, respond swiftly towards fashion, market demand and focus on other value-added activities.

For the half year ended June 30, 2007, Voir posted a net profit of RM3mil on revenue of RM55mil. The group projected a net profit of RM9.5mil on revenue of RM133mil for the year ending Dec 31, 2007.

MD has vast experience in banking industry

Updated : 08-10-2007
Media : The Star

PRIOR to joining the local fashion wear designer and retailer Voir Holdings Bhd as managing director in 1997, Ham Hon Kit was a bank manager for several local and international banks.

He had been in the banking industry for a decade, gaining a lot of experience in financial management and marketing.

Subsequently, he brought his professional experience to Voir to assist the founder, Seow Khim Soon, to expand the company's business.

¡§In this modern age, we need a good blend of entrepreneurship and professionalism so we can take Malaysian companies or family-owned businesses to the next level.

¡§I strongly believe in professional managers working together with entrepreneurs to grow a company,¡¨ he said.

When Ham first joined the company, he was one of the few graduates there. It now has a number of professionals in accounting, designing and management.

The Voir group is ranked as a top player in the local ladies apparel market. ¡§Today, ladies' wear remains our largest contributor, representing 75% of the group's total revenue,¡¨ he said.

To strengthen its presence in the domestic and overseas markets, Voir plans to open more specialty stores and counters.

¡§We will add at least two specialty stores and five counters in Malaysia by year-end,¡¨ he said. It now has 46 specialty stores and 307 counters at departmental stores.

The group also plans to open outlets in markets like Thailand, Indonesia, Kuwait and Middle East over the next two years.

Currently, it has presence in India, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Brunei, Mauritius and Reunion Island.

The group also plans to further penetrate the overseas market with a wider range of products to complement the current product range.

According to a Protege Associates market research report, the local ladies' apparel market is valued at RM1.1bil in 2006.

The Voir group has captured 6.5% to 8% market share. And the local ladies' apparel market is set to grow to RM1.65bil by 2013, representing a compounded annual growth rate of 6%.

Ham said the rise in the female working population, growing affluence of female consumers and increasing awareness of fashion and trends among female consumers of all ages were some of the factors driving the growth of this industry.

Voir in aggressive expansion mode

By Eugene Mahalingam

KUALA LUMPUR: Leading ladies' apparel market player Voir Holdings Bhd will invest up to RM10mil in the next 18 months to expand its businesses locally and overseas.

Managing director Ham Hon Kit said the company would further boost its name in Malaysia and penetrate new markets overseas.

“The company will be setting up three to five specialty stores and/or consignment counters in department stores internationally within the next nine months to a year, and 15 to 20 similar stores in Malaysia within the next one year,” he told reporters after the company's listing on Bursa Malaysia second board yesterday.

Voir had established its brand in Vietnam, Brunei, the Middle East and India, and would soon be making inroads into Thailand, Ham said.

The company will also be developing its largest concept store in Dubai by year's end or early 2008, which will have a floor space of 18,000 sq ft.

According to a market research report by Protege Associates, Voir commands 6.5% to 8% of the local ladies apparel market, making it the number one ladies apparel player in the country.

Ham said the market still had room for growth, and was confident that Voir would be able to increase its current market share.

According to the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti), the apparel industry's revenue hit RM3.26bil in 2006, with the ladies apparel segment contributing RM1.1bil.

Miti has forecast the latter figure to reach RM1.65bil by 2013.

“Looking at the health of the Malaysian economy, the many projects announced, coupled with the EPF dividend increase, they will provide more purchasing power to consumers,” Ham said.

On the company's listing, he said it would enhance its image locally and abroad, and give more confidence to customers.

TA Securities has valued the company at RM2.17, based on 8.5 times the financial year ending Dec 31, 2008 price/earnings ratio (PER), benchmarking it against the calendar year 2008 average PER of its industry peers.

According to the research house, the fair value translates to a potential upside of 13.6% from the initial public offering (IPO) price of RM1.91.

Voir made its debut yesterday at RM1.99 for an eight sen premium over its IPO price. It reached an intra-day high of RM2.13 before ending the day at RM1.89, down two sen.

Voir allocates RM10m for store expansion

October 25 2007

FASHION wear manufacturer and retailer Voir Holdings Bhd has allocated some RM10 million to fund its store expansion both locally and overseas within the next one year.

The group plans to open about 25 stores or between 15 and 20 stores locally and 3-5 stores overseas.

"We want to further develop the local market, which is the group's core market, especially with many upcoming malls in the country," managing director Ham Hon Kit said in Kuala Lumpur.

Voir, which floated its shares on the Bursa Malaysia yesterday, opened with an 8 sen premium at RM1.99 on a volume of 6,001 shares.

The counter reached its intra-day high at RM2.13 before closing at RM1.91 with some 13.4 million shares traded.

Established 37 years ago, Voir has 14 in-house brands and commands about eight per cent market share in the local ladies apparel market, which is valued at between RM1.2 billion and RM1.6 billion each year.

The group now has 46 stand-alone stores and 310 consignment counters. It is also licensed to sell sportswear Chiemsee and Diadora.

On the international front, Voir will be opening its largest concept store in Dubai, spanning approximately 18,000 sq ft, projected to be in operation by early next year.

Currently, Voir labels can be found in Vietnam, Brunei, India, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Mauritius and Reunion Island.

"We expect exports will be significant at about 10 per cent of the group's revenue within three to five years," Ham said.

Last year, exports made up three per cent of total revenue. It was earlier reported that Voir is projecting an average 10 per cent revenue growth the next two to three years as it expands both locally and abroad.

The company had raised RM15 million from its initial public offering exercise, of which RM8 million will be used to repay its bank borrowings, about RM5.3 million to fund its working capital while the rest will go to the group's listing expenses.

Retailing: Voir all geared up to venture abroad
By Vasantha Ganesan
October 27 2007

MALAYSIAN clothing retailer and manufacturer Voir Holdings Bhd (VHB) sees huge potential for its less-than-a-year home brand - Noir.

With only four outlets in Malaysia and strong support from the tourists market, it is not surprising that the brand is already geared to make a presence abroad by year-end.

"Noir is still a young baby. She is just a year old. As such, we have not completely seen the potential," managing director Ham Hon Kit said.

"Sales contribution varies depending on the location but on average 60 per cent of it is tourists and 40 per cent local," he told Business Times in an interview.

"Since the brand only took off at the tail-end of 2006, it is still a small contributor," he said.

Ham, however, said: "We are taking it abroad by year-end."

On which would be the likely location, he said there has been keen interest from Middle Easterners and Asians.

"If we take Noir abroad, the first stop is likely to be Dubai," he said, adding that apart from the appeal of the products to the Arabs, VHB also has a distributor there.

Noir, which means black in French, was introduced by designer Paul Cheung, who is also the executive director of VBH subsidiary Visual Joy Sdn Bhd.

Cheung, who likes to wear black himself, thought it was a good idea to introduce the Noir idea as the colour black does not go out of style.

"The Noir fashion is different. It offers modern orientalism at affordable prices," he said.

Each Noir store, which carries both clothing and home decor, focuses on lifestyle elements of feng shui.

The first Noir store was opened in Queensbay Mall in Penang, the second in Bangsar Village II and the third in Mid Valley Megamall. The latest outlet is at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

The products at the stores are sourced from China, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Each store carries between 75 and 80 per cent of clothing while non-clothing or items for decor make up the remaining.

"Our non-clothing items are also very well received. We have even got orders for our doors (used to close the store) in Bangsar Village," Ham said, adding that the door was offered at RM17,000.

Voir steps up overseas drive

By RACHAEL KAM

SECOND board-listed apparel designer and retailer Voir Holdings Bhd is keen to raise its brand profile through its Voir Gallery and specialty stores not only in Malaysia but the regional markets.

“Voir Gallery will be our gateway to market the company's home-grown brands abroad. The first offshore gallery will be in Dubai by April,” managing director Ham Hon Kit told StarBiz.

“This is in line with our strategic plans to promote Voir fashion products to a bigger international audience.”

Ham is optimistic overseas contribution to the group revenue will increase to 10% within four years from 4% in last financial year ended Dec 31, 2007 (FY07) and 3% in 2006.

However, Voir is still “an infant” in the international market place and much is needed to be done to achieve its offshore ambitions. The company was listed last October.

“We are looking for suitable foreign partners to open these galleries and more specialty stores in more countries.”

The company has opened specialty stores and consignment counters in Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), India, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Mauritius and Reunion Islands.

“We believe with the wide market presence, Voir will grow in both depth and breadth in the next few years into a major retail brand.” The Middle East is Voir's second largest overseas market after Vietnam, followed by Brunei, Thailand, Indonesia and India, he said, adding that the focus these two years would be the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Vietnam and India.

Ham Hon Kit showing a range of Voir apparel and handbags at Voir Gallery.

The company is targeting Vietnam as the next country to set up Voir Gallery.

Ham was positive of the retail outlook in those countries, given rising consumer spending, growing population, high tourist arrivals and good economic growth.

The 18,000 sq ft-Dubai Gallerywill showcase Voir Clothings, Voir Shoez, South China Sea, Soda Exchange, Soda Men's Wear and Soda Kids.

Shoppers can find Voir apparel, shoes, accessories and its other inhouse brands in the Voir Gallery.

“Voir Gallery offers a wider range of products for all market segments - the ladies, men and kids range,” Ham said. “We love to promote Malaysian brands overseas. Local brands have a good chance in the international market, especially if they are of good quality.”

This year, Voir will be opening another 15 to 17 specialty stores and consignment counters overseas.

The new potential markets being explored are Kuwait, Oman and Qatar. “We are confident of making a bigger success in the international market because our brands are well received abroad.

On China, he said plans were afoot to expand the company's product range to venture into the huge market there.

The in-house brands include Soda, Soda Kids and South China Sea.

“Currently, Voir has yet to produce apparel to cater to the four seasons countries. It would be a longer-term plan,” he added.

Locally, Voir will be opening another five stores and galleries, and 20 to 30 counters at departmental stores this year. By June, it will open a 7,000-sq ft Voir Gallery in the Klang Valley.

The largest gallery of more than 20,000 sq ft will be open in Johor by the third quarter of this year.

Supported by its local and offshore expansion plans, Ham is confident the company could look forward to double-digit growth in revenue and net profit in FY08. For FY07, Voir recorded RM10.5mil in net profit on revenue of RM128.8mil.

Up-to-date designs from head to toe

DEVELOPING new product ranges for young women and men will be the driving force for Voir Holdings Bhd to boost its market presence and sales, according to managing director Ham Hon Kit.

Ham, who is keeping a close watch over the company's research and design team, has set out to raise the quality of Voir's products and introduce up-to-date designs.

The company has recently introduced the Soda brand of men's innerwear and socks. It also has appointed a local licensed eyewear specialist for its new product Voir eyewear, which will be introduced soon.

“We will continue to emphasise on research and development, and tighten our branding to deliver good quality products that suit consumers' requirements.

“Our designers are always mindful of market needs. As we are catering to consumers in tropical countries like Malaysia, we are able to meet their needs and requirements in terms of design, except for a slight valuation in the size ,” he said.

Currently, Voir has about 35 experienced Malaysian designers; with each sub-label under a team of two or three designers.

The designers travel extensively to conduct research and development work. They are required to participate in most fashion fairs and exhibitions as well as fabric exhibitions.

Voir is involved in designing, developing, branding, marketing and retailing 14 in-house labels. It is also a licensed distributor for international labels Diadora and Chiemsee.

Its in-house brands include Voir Clothings, Voir Shoez, Voir Inner Wear, Soda Men's Wear, Soda Exchange, Soda Kids, POP Soda, Applemints, South China Sea, Noir and G&H.

Asked if Voir would diversify into other new products, Ham said: “We will focus on fashion and retailing, although there are plans to venture into other new markets and introduce more brands.”

“Now our main income source is still retailing,” he added.

In order to minimise operational costs, Voir would continue to source its supplies from buying houses and agent factories in China and India.

Currently, Voir retails a comprehensive range of products from ladies', men's and children's apparel to ladies' accessories, eyewear, ladies' and men's inner wear and ladies' shoes.

Voir's products cater to those aged three years to 30 and above.

Under the company's brand building exercise, Voir has engaged international artists as its brand ambassadors; they are Dylan Kuo Pin Chao from Taiwan and Yumiko Cheng from Hong Kong. The company will be announcing the appointment of another ambassador by the end of the month.
