KLRC making waves in international scene

THE absence of China’s Lin Dan and the early exits of Indonesian TaufikHidayat and Malaysians Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong are not the onlyhot topics at the ongoing Malaysian Open.  


Professional badminton club KLRC Bhd have also been hogging their fair share of the limelight.
For the first time, a record number of local and international playershave been seen in the Malaysian Open under the sponsorship of theMalaysian club.


And more players are set to be playing under the KLRC banner in other tournaments this year.
World number 11 Petya Nedeltcheva of Bulgaria was happy that the clubhad come to her rescue as far as competing in international tournamentsis concerned.


“They have been funding me for the last five months. Funds are hard tocome by for me, especially in a country where badminton is not a bigsport. But I am glad that the club have come to the rescue of playerslike me,” said the 24-year-old.


“I am able to compete in more tournaments to keep alive my hopes ofqualifying and winning a medal at the Beijing Olympic Games.


“It is good that players now have an option if they want to extend their badminton career.”


Apart from Nedeltcheva, the club’s latest recruit is former world number one and China-born Zhou Mi of Hong Kong.



And the Chinese almost caused the biggest shock in the ongoingMalaysian Open when she came close to beating defending champion andworld champion Zhu Lin of China in the second round on Thursday.
A majority of players from Taiwan and Russia are also donning KLRC banner.


Besides being a haven for the international players, KLRC have alsoplayed a big part in reviving the career of local shuttlers.


And the ones still making their presence felt in the internationaltournaments are Lee Tsuen Seng, Sairul Amar Ayob and Lim Pek Siah-HawChiou Hwee.
