BWF SUPER SERIES - GRAND FINALS
China lead charge
27 March 2007
With one third of the Super Series event concluded, China is leading the charge for berths in the Super Series Grand Finals on December 18-23.
Only the top eight players based on the Super Series’ ranking will qualify for the Grand Finals, and to date, China looks to have 13 berths secured in the five categories.
In the men’s singles, China is simply awesome with the top four positions, in order of ranking, occupied by Chen Jin, Lin Dan, Bao Chunlai and Chen Yu.
China is just as dominant in the women’s singles and doubles with Zhu Lin, Lu Lan and Xie Xinfang occupying the No 1, third and fifth positions respectively.
The irrepressible pair of Gao Ling-Huang Sui, Yang Wei-Zhang Jiewen and Zhang Yawen-Wei Yili are in commanding form in the women’s doubles.
The Super Series is a 12-leg event culminating with a Grand Finals in December. The venue for the Grand Finals has not been confirmed yet.
Rounding up China’s charge, at this point in time, are the men’s doubles pair of Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng and the mixed doubles pairs of Zheng Bo-Gao Ling and Xie Zhongbo-Zhang Yawen.
Indonesia don’t have a single player in the women’s singles in the running for a berth in the Grand Finals but is a distant second with five representatives ranked among the top eight in the remaining four categories.
In the men’s singles, Indonesia’s Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat’s continued absence from the Super Series events means Sony Dwi Kuncoro is the highest ranked Indonesian at joint-fifth.
But after Simon Santoso’s great run in Basel, eventually finishing runner-up, Indonesia could have another player or two in the running by year end.
Other Indonesians poised to qualify are the men’s doubles pair of Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan, Greysia Polii-Vita Marissa (women’s doubles) and Muhammad Rijal-Polii Greysia and Nova Widianto-Lilyana Natsir in the mixed doubles.
Malaysia and Denmark, on the other hand, are closing in on Indonesia with four representatives each.
Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, who have won three of the four men’s doubles titles in the Super Series are Malaysia’s best bets for a place in the Grand Finals with veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah currently occupying eighth position in the rankings.
In the men’s singles, Lee Chong Wei’s current poor form sees him in eighth position as well while Wong Mew Choo will be called on to produce more giant-killing feats in the coming events as she attempts to improve on her current fourth position in the women’s singles.
The Danes have the ever reliable pair of Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen (men’s doubles) sitting at No 3 and Malaysia open men’s singles champion Peter Gade Christensen at No 7.
They also have a pair each in the mixed doubles and women’s doubles.
But with the Olympic Games qualifying period beginning next month, the battle for the forthcoming Super Series events could be more intense as Beijing provides a powerful motivation for any top shuttler.
And with the Super Series set to continue with the back to back Singapore Open (May 1-6) and Indonesia Open (May 7-13), some interesting changes can take place.
