Expiry of Johore State Assembly mandate tomorrow may force quick decision on dissolution of Parliament
PUTRAJAYA: The expiry of the mandate of the Johor State Assembly tomorrow may force Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to make a quick decision to dissolve Parliament to pave the way for GE13.The Johor State Assembly is the first of several State Assemblies to have their mandates expire. Next is the Negeri Sembilan state assembly which will see the termination of its mandate on March 26. Pahang’s State Assembly is next in the list and its mandate expires on April 7 followed by Selangor on April 22. The mandates of the State Assemblies of Perak and Malacca expire on April 24 and 26 respectively followed by Perlis and Kelantan on April 28. Sabah is the next state to have the mandate of its State Assembly expire on April 29 followed by Penang and Kedah on May 2 and Terengganu on May 5. Sarawak is the only unaffected State as it held its State elections in 2011. The mandate of Parliament itself expires on April 28 and if it is not dissolved by then, a general election must be held within 60 days of its automatic dissolution. Lately, rumours had spread like wildfire on when Parliament would be dissolved and the sight of Najib’s official car leaving the Istana Negara would spark off a fresh round of rumours. Today, the Internet was buzzing with news that Najib’s car was seen in Istana Negara and rumours spread that he had obtained permission from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve Parliament today. This rumour was denied by the Prime Minister’s Press Office with two tweets at around lunch time.
