Stalled takeover of water assets should not hamper development of water treatment plant
SUBANG JAYA: The stalled takeover of water assets in Selangor by the state government should not hamper the development of the Langat 2 water treatment plant, according to Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili.
Ongkili said he intended to meet with the Selangor Mentri Besar to discuss developments for the plant.
“We will proceed with Langat 2 as per the heads of agreement (HoA) and the master agreement, which is the mechanism to fulfil the HoA,” he said after officiating at Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) Tenaga Hub yesterday.
The minister said Selangor should allow the development for Langat 2 to proceed, adding that it must provide the necessary permits and land that were required to ensure long-term water supply.
“I have written to the Mentri Besar saying that the ball is in his court. I will wait for him until he can supply me with the assets,” Ongkili said.
“The HoA is irrevocable,” he added.
The Langat 2 water treatment project is crucial to ensure adequate water supply for consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. It is estimated that internal water sources in Selangor can only meet 60% of the requirement.
Under the HoA, signed between the Federal and Selangor state governments in August last year, the federal government will transfer RM2bil to facilitate the state’s water asset acquisition from concessionaires.
It will pay RM7.6bil to take over the bonds and loans from the concessionaires.
“I think we need to quickly wrap this up because everyday, the receivables are increasing. The sooner they give us the assets, release the money and take over the bonds, the sooner the impasse will be solved,” Ongkili said.
Meanwhile, TNB will invest RM18mil to provide a new and fresh look to its premier customer service centres, which have been rebranded as “Tenaga Hub”.
The move is part of the utility company’s efforts to provide optimal services to its customers.
“TNB has invested RM1.5mil for each of its Tenaga Hub outlets. All of them are scheduled to be completed by 2017,” said Ongkili.
He added that 11 more Tenaga Hub outlets would be built from now until 2017. Three of them are expected to be opened soon in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor.
