Calm before the storm for our juniors in Auckland
PETALING JAYA: After enjoying light workouts for the past two days, it will start to get tough from today for the Malaysian shuttlers in the KLRC World Junior Championships at the Trusts Stadium in Auckland.
Top seed Mohd Arif Abdul Latif ousted Boris Ma of Australia 21-11, 21-12 in the third round yesterday to set up a match today against South Korean Kim Sa-rang. In the same quarter is 2006 Asian Championships gold medallist Tago Kenichi of Japan, who is seeded sixth. “The match against the Korean will be my first real test. It won't be easy, considering that he beat Chinese player Zhang Qi in rubber games. But he was also taken to three games today and that may be to my advantage,” said Arif in a telephone interview from Auckland yesterday.
Third seed Lim Fang Yang cruised through with a 21-18, 21-15 win over Peyo Boichinov of Bulgaria and will play against 14th seeded Indonesian Arif Nandang for a place in the quarter-finals. Vountus Indra Mawan will also be up against an Indonesian, Adi Pratama.
Teo Kok Siang was taken to the distance by Taiwanese Jen Hao-hsu before prevailing 21-17, 19-21, 21-15 and he will play against eighth seed Park Sung-min of South Korea today. The Malaysian challenge in the girls' singles competition could come to an end today unless Lydia Cheah springs a surprise against third seed Wang Lin of China.
Lydia beat Chloe Chow of United States 21-10, 21-11 in the second round and followed up with a 21-11, 21-16 win over Japan's Uchida Suzuki. The second Malaysian girls singles player in the fray, Tee Jing Yi, sprained her ankle in a 17-21, 19-21 defeat by Japan's Miki Yuriko in the third round yesterday and faces the prospect of having to pull out of the girls' doubles competition today.
Jing Yi in a partnership with Woon Khe Wei had chalked a surprise 21-19, 18-21, 22-20 win over Danish eighth seeds Anne Skelbaek-Maria Helsbol in the second round. Doubles coach Jeremy Gan said a decision would be made in the morning on whether Jing Yi would get onto court for a match against China's Jing Xie-Qianxin Zhong.
The top two seeds in the mixed doubles competition, Tan Wee Kiong-Khe Wei and Lim Khim Wah-Ng Hui Lin, will be in for testing times in third and fourth round matches that will be contested today. Wee Kiong-Khe Wei meet Wifqi Windarto-Pia Zebadiah Bernadet in the third round while Khim Wah-Hui Lin will have to be wary of China's Biao Chai-Jing Xie.
