Napoli look to be making a play to beat off competition for Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho.

The France international centre-back has fallen out of favour at the Parc des Princes and is desperate to leave for first team football to make sure of his spot in Didier Deschamp's Les Bleus squad for the 2014 World Cup.

His situation is complicated somewhat by PSG's desire for him to extend his contract, which expires next summer as a condition of being loaned out for this season.

Sakho has been strongly linked with Liverpool, while AC Milan and Roma have also been mooted as destinations for the 23-year-old.

But Napoli are serious suitors too, and according to Italian Gazzetta dello Sport, officials from the club met Sakho's agent yesterday in Milan.

It remains to be seen where Sakho ends up on September 2, but the defender is desperate to ensure he is still not at PSG.

Liverpool are looking to bolster their defence with a deal for Paris Saint-Germain’s Mamadou Sakho.
Brendan Rodgers confirmed on Tuesday night that Liverpool are interested in the France central defender.
Sakho, 23, has won 14 caps for his country and can also play at left back. Barcelona are also monitoring him.

Paris St Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has played down talk of Liverpool-target Mamadou Sakho leaving, claiming he is like their Steven Gerrard.

Sahko, 23, is unsettled at PSG, where he has been since he was 12, and is keen to go, prompting interest from Liverpool, AC Milan, Napoli and Roma.

The French international centre-half has yet to play a competitive game this season and his current deal expires next summer.

Al-Khelaifi claims he has spoken to Sakho and has told him he does not want him to go.

"Sakho is a child of the club just like Steven Gerrard is at Liverpool," Al-Khelaifi told L'Equipe.

"It is hard to imagine him wearing another team's jersey. I'm a little surprised that he wants to leave.

"I had a discussion with him. My position is very clear and he knows it. We want to keep him and we will do everything to achieve that."

Liverpool news: Rodgers lines up Lescott bid

Liverpool are ready to reignite their interest in Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott.

The Reds were linked with the star earlier this summer but no deal ever materialised – with Kolo Toure signed on a free transfer instead.

But the injuries to Toure and Sebastian Coates have forced boss Brendan Rodgers’ hand, and he is keen to recruit at least one centre-back before the end of the transfer window.

Lescott has emerged as a target, with the England international set to be frozen out by the impending arrival of Martin Demichelis at the Etihad Stadium.

Lescott, who has started both of City’s opening two games, would cost around ￡7.5 million, but Rodgers would have to convince the Anfield money-men to cough up for a player who falls outside of their normal recruitment policy.

The 31-year-old’s age may yet put the buffers on any deal, but Rodgers is keen to inject his defence with both quality and experience.
