Badminton: Sock Ai sidelined due to injuryBy : K.M.BOOPATHY
Sock Ai, who informed national chief coach Yap Kim Hock and women’s doubles coach Cheah Soon Kit of her decision yesterday, will need at least three months to recover. Sock Ai, 23, and Fong Chew Yen were offered a wild card to compete in the World Championships but the former will now be replaced by Mooi Hing Yau.
"Sock Ai informed Soon Kit and I that she wants to pull out as the back injury is quite serious. However, I’ve told her to give it a rethink after she completes her treatment and rehabilitation in three months," said Kim Hock yesterday.
"We have replaced her with Hing Yau. We have written to Badminton World Federation (BWF) of the change.
"I hope she will make a full recovery and, hopefully, she can still continue playing as she is still young."
Sock Ai had initially partnered Hing Yau but lack of results saw her combining with Chew Yen and also Ooi Yu Hang.
She was more successful in the mixed doubles where she had partnered Fairuzizuan Tazari but has been effective with new partner Hoon Thien How.
Thien How-Sock Ai reached the quarter-finals of the Asian Badminton Championships last month and is one of the pairs being groomed for next year’s Beijing Olympics. |
