Badminton: Choong Hann set to get nod

PETALING JAYA: Veteran men’s singles shuttler Wong Choong Hann is set to get his first big break this year when the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) finalise the squad for the Sudirman Cup today.
Based on his recent performances at the New Zealand Open, Choong Hann is the favourite pick ahead of KLRC Bhd’s Lee Tsuen Seng for the premier world mixed team event in Glasgow, Scotland, from June 11-17.
Both Choong Hann and Tsuen Seng have been on the provisional list of the Sudirman Cup squad released by the BAM two weeks ago but today one will be dropped.
At the recent New Zealand Open, Choong Hann put himself as a front-runner when he ousted Tsuen Seng in the semi-finals.
Choong Hann, however, could not keep pace against the fast-rising Indonesian star Andre Kurniawan Tedjono, losing 21-13, 18-21, 14-21 in the final.
National chief coach Yap Kim Hock said yesterday that two players would be dropped from their provisional list of 12 players.
“We have given the coaches more time to decide on the squad. Today, we will drop one men’s singles and one women’s singles player. The coaches are looking into the players’ current form and also their ability to play both the singles and doubles events,” said Kim Hock.
If Choong Hann gets it, it will be his second major tournament since he limped out from the court with a ruptured Achilles tendon during the Thomas Cup Finals in Japan last year.
He was selected to represent Malaysia in the team event at the Asian Games in Doha in December as the fourth ranked men’s singles player but he did not play a prominent role.
After a six-month break, he tried to qualify for this year’s World Championships, which will be held at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Aug 13-19, but failed.
Choong Hann lost out to Nusa Mahsuri’s Mohd Roslin Hashim who received a wild card entry.
In the women’s singles, the tussle is between Julia Wong and Lydia Cheah.
The others confirmed for the Sudirman Cup are Lee Chong Wei, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Wong Mew Choo, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty and Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei.
Malaysia will be playing in Division One and their target is to finish among the top four for the first time.
They have been drawn in Group A with defending champions China, England and Thailand.
In Group B are Denmark, South Korea, Indonesia and Hong Kong. |

征蘇迪曼杯名單出爐
綜翰壓倒傳成
（吉隆坡25日訊）在蘇迪曼杯只是第2次角逐第一級比賽的馬來西亞羽球隊，在第10屆賽會不僅放眼護級，更鎖定了4強的目標。
這項男、女混合的團體賽，將于6月11日至16日，在蘇格蘭首府格拉斯哥舉行，大馬隊雖然是升班馬，但是在擁有以世界第4號男單李宗偉、世界第2號男雙古健傑與陳重名，以及世界第6號女雙黃佩蒂與陳儀慧押陣下，仍被列為賽會第4種子，與衛冕冠軍兼5屆霸主中國、英格蘭及泰國同組。
根據前日公佈的賽程，大馬隊將在11日的序幕戰，火併半個主隊英格蘭。
國家隊總教練葉錦福說：“這是我們第2次參加第一級比賽，我們以晉級4強為目標，確保下一屆繼續留在第一級。”
B組由3屆冠軍韓國、首屆賽會霸主印尼、丹麥及香港組成。
整體實力來看，B組兩席半決賽權呈三強鼎立局面，印、韓、丹3隊中必有一隊成為失意人，大馬若以A組副盟晉級，半決賽無論對上那一隊，都未必沒有取勝希望。
大馬羽總今日確定了最后10人名單，由于法魯茲祖安及黃佩嫻退出，陳偉強及安妮塔拉治獲得補召（有待世界羽聯批准）。
其他確定參賽的隊員為男單李宗偉、黃綜翰、女單黃妙珠、男雙古健傑與陳文宏、女雙黃佩蒂與陳儀慧及雙打女將溫可微；先前在觀察名單的男單李傳成及女單謝麗雅都落榜。 |
