Borderlands' "Zombie Island" DLC Releasing November 24
Roughly two weeks from now, players will be able to drop $9.99 on a ticket to "The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned."By Dustin Quillen, 11/09/2009
Borderlands' first round of DLC, "The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned," got a release date this morning. Expect the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the add-on to arrive on November 24. The PC version, on the other hand, went unmentioned in the press release.
In case you missed the original announcement, this DLC will take players to Jakobs Cove, where a fellow by the name of Dr. Ned has -- perhaps unwittingly -- transformed the local workforce into a rotting army of undead atrocities. It falls on the shoulders of the loot-crazed Vault hunters to discover a cure and bring peace back to the Cove, although let's be honest here: Nothing cures a case of zombie plague like a shotgun blast to the face. Releasing almost an entire month after Halloween, "The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned" isn't the most timely of add-ons, but it sounds like it could be a hoot either way. It'll cost you $9.99 (800 Microsoft points) when it shows up November 24.
People go through life looking for different things. Some want money. Others crave fame or are driven by sex. Many are motivated by family. And a few just want love.
As for me, I’m looking for an epic or legendary low-recoil assault rifle with a high degree of accuracy, a rapid rate of fire and the ability to do a lot of damage. Oh yeah, and a decent-size magazine wouldn’t hurt either.
The Good
- Environments and enemies offer welcome variety
- Great humor throughout
- Good number of quests and areas
- Same great gunplay, loot, and artistic style
The Bad
- Difficulty is based on your story progress rather than character level
- Occasional visual slowdown

While it'd be great to get some downloadable content that adds in character class skills, heaps of new items, bumps up the level cap, or builds in more interesting and complex quest and encounter mechanics, what's presented here is a guaranteed good time.
The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is a well-made and entertaining piece of content, giving Borderlands fans a chance to sink bullets into undead flesh in new environments and with some additional quest goals. The expansion also offers stronger story elements, something mostly propped up with wacky humor and nonsense, which is quite fitting considering the context of a zombie outbreak and ludicrous amount of loot and bullets and death.
While it doesn't alter the core of Borderlands in any dramatic kind of way, it is one of the most vividly characterized zones. Considering the strength of the gameplay formula and the fact that it's still fairly soon after the main game's release, what's presented here -- more things to kill and more reasons to laugh while doing so -- is welcome.
