Liverpool saw their £15 million offer for England winger Stewart Downing rejected this week by Aston Villa. But the Daily Mirror’s John Cross feels that £15million is too much for the former Middlesbrough player and he doubts whether Downing is good enough to improveKenny Dalglish‘s team significantly.
“I think we know Stewart Downing’s limitations,” he explains of the Liverpool target. “He’s a good Premier League player, but I think he’s always fallen slightly short when he’s stepped up to England level.”
“I think it’s strange that Liverpool – a club of that stature with that ambition – are willing to pay that sort of money for a player who I always think just falls short of making that next step up. He’s a good crosser of the ball and he’ll provide the natural width. But for me, he won’t dominate games.”
Reports suggest that Liverpool and Aston Villa will settle at a fee of £18million for Downing.
