Las Vegas Strip gaming revenue tumbled 9.6% in February, and Atlantic City gaming revenue fell 6.7% in March. While we were not surprised by the magnitude of the decline in Atlantic City, which has been on a downward trajectory for several years, we were slightly surprised by the steep decline in Las Vegas, which has now reported lower gaming revenue for four consecutive months.
In our view, weaker Atlantic City gaming revenue results from intensified competition from new casinos outside New Jersey, in particular Pennsylvania casinos. However, the magnitude of the decline in Vegas, and the fact that Vegas Strip revenue has fallen for several months now, is somewhat surprising, as Vegas Strip revenue increased more than 4% for the first 10 months of 2010 and visitation to Las Vegas and Vegas hotel revenue has been increasing the past several months. We think three main factors are stalling the recovery in the Las Vegas Strip market. First, in our view, the Vegas market is being hurt by competition from regional casinos, in particular tribal casinos in Southern California. We think consumers are choosing to gamble closer to home. Second, we think the Vegas Strip market is losing critical VIP customers to new casinos in Singapore, which are on track to surpass the Vegas Strip market as the world's second-largest gaming center in the next two years. Third, the market is being hurt by unemployment in Las Vegas, which is still above 13%.
The declines in the two largest U.S. gambling markets will disproportionately hurt MGM Resorts (MGM), which derives more than 80% of its revenue from the Vegas Strip market, and Boyd Gaming (BYD), which garners a significant percentage of its revenue from Atlantic City. MGM's and Boyd's stocks were both down more than 5% since the monthly gaming revenue figures were reported late last week and early this week. Las Vegas Sands (LVS) was also down by a similar amount, but because it generates less than 15% of its revenue from the U.S. and 85% from Asia, we view the decrease in its stock as unwarranted and continue to view it as undervalued. |
