KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — Fresh from a contentious re-election, the DAP central executive committee (CEC) reaffirmed today Zairil Khir Johari as the party's interim chairman for Kedah. Secretary-general Lim Guan Eng told reporters at the party headquarters here that Zairil was initially appointed in May after the general election but is now re-appointed by the newly elected CEC. “At the CEC meeting held earlier in the day, the CEC decided to appoint saudara Zairil Khir Johari as the interim Kedah DAP state chairman,” Lim said. Compelled to re-hold elections by the Registrar of Society, the opposition party’s grassroots voted yesterday in the same CEC lineup that made the cut in the party’s December polls, which the RoS later declared illegal. Many more of the 2,000-plus delegates who qualified to vote also chose to cast their ballot for Zairil, who is also the Bukit Bendera MP, pushing his ranking from the 20th and last rung in December to 12th spot this time around. The young politician was the sole Malay representative on the committee and garnered 1,132 votes or 329 more than the 803 votes he netted in the December 15 party leadership election last year. Zairil's position in the CEC would likely help the DAP dispel its Chinese chauvinist stigma although Lim admitted that more must be done to improve the party's standing among the country's Malay majority. Deputy secretary-general Anthony Loke also announced that state party conventions will be held from November 30 in Negri Sembilan, until January 12 in Johor. “According to our party constitution, we need to give eight weeks notice to state delegates in order to have state conventions. “Kedah [will not have a state convention] because we have just appointed an interim committee led by saudara Zairil, so that will need six months period. “We will decide later when to have the state convention,” Loke said. - See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.co ... thash.wCGuzeD1.dpuf
