Malaysia beat weakened South Korea to emerge champions

PETALING JAYA: Mohd Hafiz Hashim helped Malaysia emerge as the champions of the Thomas Cup qualifying tournament when he won the final match of the tie against a weakened South Korea in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday.
With the score level at 2-2, Hafiz, who has vowed to revive his badminton career after leaving Nusa Mahsuri, delivered the winning point by beating Lee Yong-dae 21-17, 21-10 in just 27 minutes.
A loss to Yong-dae, a doubles specialist, would have been embarrassing for Hafiz.
South Korea tweaked their line-up yesterday by not fielding their top two singles players – Park Sung-hwan and Lee Hyun-il – and featuring scratch partnerships in the doubles.
Lee Chong Wei and Wong Choong Hann took advantage of the weakened singles line-up to score convincing wins over Shon Seung-mo and Lee Cheol-ho in less than 30 minutes each.
But the Malaysian men’s doubles pairs of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif were a huge letdown.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong were expected to give Malaysia a 2-0 lead after Chong Wei’s superb win but the world No. 3 pair went down to the scratch partnership of Lee jae-jin-Jung Jae-sung 16-21, 21-17, 19-21. 
Jae-jin-Jae-sung were once partners but have formed solid combinations with Hwang Ji-man and Yong-dae respectively over the last two years.
But the biggest blow came in the second doubles, featuring Fairuzizuan-Zakry.
The Koreans had paired their top singles player Sung-hwan with Ji-man in the second doubles and they still proved to be too good for Fairuzizuan-Zakry, winning 21-19, 21-18 in only 32 minutes. 
With the win yesterday, Malaysian will head for the Finals, which will be held in Jakarta from May 11-19, as champions of the Asian qualifiers.
