BURSA MALAYSIA POSTS LOWER NET PROFIT OF RM70.7 MILLION IN 2008 HALF YEAR DUE TO GLOBAL AND LOCAL MARKET SENTIMENTS
Interim dividend of 91% net profit delivers value to shareholders
Bursa Malaysia Berhad (Bursa Malaysia) today reported a net profit of RM70.7 million for the half-year ended 30 June 2008 - a 48% decline compared to the net profit of RM135.2 million for the corresponding period last year. Bursa Malaysia’s operating revenue dropped by 31% to RM164.1million from RM239.2 million registered in the same period last year. This decline was primarily due to the decreased trading activity in the volatile equities market arising from global and domestic uncertainties as well as the sharp increase in oil, commodity and food prices. Bursa Malaysia however remains committed to delivering continued value to its shareholders and declared an interim gross dividend of 16.5 sen per share for the period under review.
Bursa Malaysia’s Chief Executive Officer, Dato’Yusli Mohamed Yusoff said, “There seems to be little relief from the escalating global economic challenges. Despite that, now is the opportune time to bargain hunt fundamental stocks as our market offers many quality pickings. The lacklustre market has not dampened foreign investor interest significantly as foreign trading participation remains constant at 40%.”
The daily average trading value for the equities market was lower at RM1.7 billion compared to RM2.7 billion for the half year of 2007. Velocity for the period under review also dropped to 38% in comparison to 61% for the same period last year. Trading revenue for the equities market decreased by 48% to RM84.9 million as compared to RM164.5 million in the first half of 2007.
The total number of derivatives contracts traded dropped marginally by 5% - 3.1 million contracts in half year of 2008 versus 3.2 million contracts in the same period in 2007.Consequently, the trading revenue for the derivatives market fell by 7% to RM22.0 million from RM23.7 million in the corresponding period in 2007. Dato’ Yusli commented that the derivatives market performance did not experience a significant drop due to investors’ sustained appetite for derivatives products.
There were a total of 14 newly listed companies as at 30 June 2008 compared to 12 in the previous corresponding period. The growth in listings is sustainable given the current market condition which reflects the confidence that companies have in the Malaysian capital market.
Bursa Malaysia also announced an interim gross dividend of 16.5 sen per share or a net dividend of 12.21 sen per share, which represents a payout of 91% of the Group’s net profit for the period ended 30 June 2008. The payout is 16% higher than the Group’s dividend policy of minimum 75% payout. The interim dividend will be paid out to its shareholders on 13 August 2008.
For the next half of the year, Bursa Malaysia will remain focused on rolling out its initiatives to build the competitiveness of both the equities and derivatives market. “We are at the final stages of implementing the new securities trading platform which aims to offer higher efficiency. We are also planning to launch the US Dollar crude palm oil futures contract, which is a globally competitive futures product, on 5 September 2008.”
The financial results for the first half of 2008 are available on Bursa Malaysia’s website (www.bursamalaysia.com).
Financial Results | 1H08 | 1H07 | | RM 'mil | RM 'mil | Operating revenue | 164.1 | 239.2 | Other income | 22.8 | 27.3 | Total revenue | 186.9 | 266.5 | Staff costs | (43.1) | (41.8) | Depreciation and amortisation | (9.3) | (7.0) | Other operating expenses | (37.9) | (31.4) | Profit from operations | 96.6 | 186.3 | Finance costs | (0.3) | (0.3) | Profit before tax | 96.3 | 186.0 | Income tax expense | (25.6) | (50.8) | Profit for the period | 70.7 | 135.2 |

18-07-2008: Bursa CIO quits
by Lee Wei Lian & Thomas Soon
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia Bhd chief information officer (CIO) Yew Kim Keong has resigned from the stock exchange, taking responsibility for the hardware failure in the trading system that resulted in an unprecedented one-day trading halt on July 3.
It is learnt that Yew had tendered his resignation and would be on leave from today until his official departure from the bourse at the end of the month.
When contacted by The Edge Financial Daily yesterday, Yew declined to comment.
A source close to Bursa Malaysia said Yew, as the CIO, had personally taken responsibility for the technical failure. However, the rumour mill is circulating that Yew has been made the “scapegoat” and that the powers-that-be had directed a deliberate halt to prevent a heavy selldown in the market that day.
Bursa Malaysia has said the trading halt was purely due to the technical failure and flatly denied the rumours of having received orders from “the top” to suspend trading to prevent any panic-selling.
Hewlett-Packard (M) Sdn Bhd or HP, which is the vendor of the HP Non-Stop Hardware, the existing architecture used by Bursa, has also said the trading halt was due to faulty hardware and not a “deliberate move” to stop trading.
Yew, together with Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Yusli Mohamed Yusoff and HP representatives, was at a press conference that week to explain the technical failure. Industry sources said Bursa Malaysia may be exploring the option of claiming damages from HP.
Yew had said the back-up system had taken longer than expected to kick in due to additional measures that were adopted to ensure trading integrity.
A computer science graduate with over 25 years’ experience in information technology, Yew was a member of the pioneer team that initiated the computerisation for the then Kuala Lumpur Stock Exhange.
Subsequently, he also implemented several major IT projects for the industry, including the trading, clearing and settlement and depository systems.
He held various key positions in the Bursa Malaysia group, including assistant general manager IT of Bursa Malaysia Securities Clearing, and senior vice-president, facilities management of Bursa Malaysia.
Bursa Malaysia consolidated its CIO positions into one. Yew was the CIO of operations prior to his appointment as the group CIO in October 2005. He was also the project director for Bursa Trade Derivatives, which was launched on Nov 20, 2006.

18-07-2008: Bursa appoints PwC to do independent audit on July 3 trading halt
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia has appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to conduct an independent audit in respect of the one-day trading halt on July 3, 2008 and is in the midst of appointing an international external consultant to assist the group in enhancing its information technology capabilities.
In a statement on July 18, Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Yusli Mohamed Yusoff said the exchange had held a special board meeting on the matter and had decided on several concrete steps moving forward to enhance the integrity of the trading system.
"The exchange will announce the details of these specific initiatives to the market in due course," he said in a statement on July 18.
Yusli said the goal of the independent audit by PwC is "to help us ascertain what we can do to improve our systems and crisis-handling capabilities should we encounter a similar situation in the future".
Meanwhile, he reiterated that the trading halt arose from technical problems and urged the discontinuation of speculation.
"With reference to the ongoing statements in the media speculating that the trading suspension that happened on July 3 was due to a directive given by higher-ups to prevent panic-selling, I would like to reiterate that this problem arose purely and unequivocally of a technical failure.
"Upholding the integrity of the market is our highest priority and we are committed to being transparent on these issues," he said.
Yusli also confirmed that Yew Kim Keong had resigned as its chief information officer, his last day with the company being July 31.
"Mr Yew is leaving the company on his own accord. We would like to acknowledge Mr Yew's immense contribution to the company with deepest gratitude and we wish him success in his future endeavours," he said.
Yusli added that Ang Ting Kang had been appointed to serve as the acting CIO until the exchange identified a suitable permanent replacement.
Citing sources, The Edge Financial Daily had reported on July 18 that Yew had resigned from the company, taking responsibility for the hardware failure in the trading system that led to the unprecedented one-day trading halt.
