Ranhill Utilities Studying Migration Options
Kuala Lumpur, Thursday November 1st …Ranhill Utilities Berhad (Ranhill Utilities), a leading regional total water and wastewater solutions provider listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia, today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary – SAJ Holdings Sdn Bhd (SAJH) is actively assessing the migration option as it anticipates that migration will unlock the equity value of the Company thus freeing up its resources for onward distribution to the shareholders. The Company will assess the migration terms to ensure that its business value will not be eroded compared to the current Concession Agreement during the migration process and under the new licensing regime.
“We recognise the Government’s intent to reform the water industry and welcome the move for the public sector to assume the burden of delivering water assets. This would allow the private sector to focus on operational excellence, and help keep water tariff levels affordable given the Government’s strength in funding long term assets” said Ahmad Zahdi Jamil, Chief Executive Officer of Ranhill Utilities, at a media conference held after the Group’s Annual General Meeting earlier today.
The Company had expressed its willingness to consider migration to the new licensing regime under the Water Supply Services Industry Act. Under the licensing regime, SAJH would be transformed into a pure operator, with responsibilities for collection of revenues and for the operations & maintenance of assets. The assets will be leased from Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad.
“Our willingness to migrate is premised on two factors, namely continuing to deliver superior service to our customers and for the new business model to remain attractive to shareholders. Under the licensing regime, SAJH would not need to conserve cash for future capital expenditures. This will allow us to immediately distribute earnings through regular dividend payments to our shareholders” said Ahmad Zahdi.
Ahmad Zahdi stressed that it is still early days, and that any decision proposed will be tabled to Ranhill Utilities’ shareholders for deliberation. “Ultimately, we must always preserve the interest of our shareholders, and ensure that Ranhill Utilities is put on a stronger footing for the future before opting for migration,” he added. SAJH currently holds the concession for the supply of water to consumers in Johor until 2029. |
