GEORGE TOWN: They come from all walks of life but share a common passion -- superbikes.
Members of the Huli Superbike Club, with more than 90 members, own the mean machines with brands such as Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Ducati, BMW and Aprillia.
A pioneer member, Kenny Ng, said Huli means fox in Mandarin, a nifty animal which moves fast.
He is one of the qualified marshals who underwent special training with PDRM in Johor Baru to lead a convoy of bikers.
Most members come from Penang, Perak and Kedah.
The youngest member in the team is 19 years old, while the oldest is 65.
"We meet over weekends and ride to destinations such as Cameron Highlands, Kuala Kangsar, Taiping, Ipoh and sometimes to rural towns in Thailand," said Micheal Lim from Bukit Mertajam.
Lim is a designer and part-time swimming coach.
"We also gather for charity events twice a year as part of our social obligation. We often make new friends on our travels," said Lim.
The group welcomes anyone who owns a motorbike.
All the person has to do is to give his name and telephone number.
There are three female members who own big bikes.
One of the newest members is gift shop owner, Evvonne Tan, from Taiping. She got interested in the sport because of her boyfriend, Calvin Chuah.
"Having been a member for three months, I have learned a lot about discipline and being alert at all times on a fast bike," said Tan.
"It takes patience and preparation to handle the machine, and safety is of the utmost concern," said Tan.
The sport requires safety gear such as gloves, helmet, boots, riding pants, knee guard and protective jacket.
"We encourage our bikers to ride responsibly on the highway and only speed during Sepang Circuit outings, which we organise regularly," said Ng.
"The racing circuit in Sepang is one place where one can test one's machine to the limit without obstacles," he said.
Ng said they also taught bikers about safety in times of emergency and shared knowledge on the latest developments in the bike industry.
"During our travels, we have made friends from United States, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and Australia," he said.
Over the years, he had observed that Malaysian motorists did not always give way to the faster motorbikes, unlike their peers in other countries.
He hoped that in time, this behaviour will improve as it involves the safety of both parties.
