No shame in defeat for Kien Keat-Boon Heong, says Rexy
NATIONAL doubles coach Rexy Mainaky wants Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong to walk tall despite the defeat by Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng in the world championship men’s doubles final yesterday.
Rexy said that there was no shame in the defeat that extended Malaysia’s wait for a first world champion.
“Yes, we missed a good chance to win a world title. But I am still happy with their performances,” he said.
“I saw their real character here in Paris. They showed real fighting spirit and was enjoying what they were doing. This was missing for some time.
“And I am happy to see their return to form here and pleased to be with them to witness them play in their first world championship final.”
Rexy added that the duo would have to learn to be more steady and to look forward to major tournaments, among them the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, world championships and the Olympic Games, with more confidence.
“We will sit down together and analyse what happened here and work towards making them stronger. There are several more challenges for them,” he said.
“The competition in the men’s doubles is still open and we will work on Koo and Tan to make them stronger than the others in the next one year leading to the Olympic Games. That is our next big goal.”
