Suárez was quoted on Wednesday in the Uruguayan newspaper El Observador as saying that he had now decided to stay at Liverpool but, after Uruguay’s 4-2 win over Japan in the evening, he denied making the statement.
He has been training alone at Liverpool following an interview with The Daily Telegraph last week in which he accused Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers of going back on promises made to him last summer that he could move if the club failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Rodgers has since said that Suárez must apologise if he wants to play for Liverpool again. The club’s owner, John W Henry, has already rejected bids of ￡35 million and ￡40,000,0001 from Arsenal and promised that Suárez will not be sold under any circumstances to Arsenal this summer.
El Observador then carried a quote on Wednesday attributed to Suárez: “For now, owing to the affection shown me by the people, I would be staying.”
The ambiguous nature of the comment allowed for various interpretations and was soon being re-reported as, ‘I’m staying because of the fans’.
After playing in Uruguay’s 4-2 win over Japan, Suárez issued a denial. “I didn’t say it. Maybe someone else did; the main thing is that I am here now with the national team,” he said. Liverpool had no contact on Wednesday with Suárez but maintain that their stance on the player remains unchanged. Rodgers is due to speak to the media on Thursday, when he is expected to reaffirm Liverpool’s position that the 26-year-old is not for sale. Arsenal accept that there must now be a change in Liverpool’s stance for any deal to get done but they have taken some hope from Suárez’s continued refusal to publicly accept that he must remain at Liverpool. A meeting has been held at Arsenal to discuss alternative options but the club are also still considering a final Suárez bid before the transfer window closes that, with add-ons, would amount to ￡49 million. Liverpool are adamant that they will reject any offer and, with only three days until the start of the Premier League season, Arsenal have still failed to spend any of a transfer budget that amounts to ￡70 million. They have already failed with club record bids for Lars Bender, Gonzalo Higuaín and Suárez - and are facing the prospect of further disappointment over an attempt to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo. Arsenal had thought they were close to a deal but, according to German newspaper Die Welt, Gustavo, 26, has opted to remain in the Bundesliga and move to Wolfsburg. That would represent a massive blow to Arsène Wenger, who is under considerable pressure to make major signings. A centre-forward remains his priority and there is also interest in Wayne Rooney, Edin Dzeko and Michu.
