Spurs hijack Liverpool’s move for Brazilian midfielder Willian [Times & Telegraph] Monday, August 19th, 2013
Welcome to today’s transfer saga… Brazilian midfielder Willian, strongly linked with Liverpool in the last few days, has a decision to make today (Monday) – either join the Merseyside giants or Tottenham, who have made a late move. Desperate to leave Russia, Willian looks almost certain to be heading to the Premier League after rejecting the advances of Zenit yesterday who had agreed a 40 million euro fee with Anzhi. Willian wants to moves to England and was heavily targeted by Liverpool who were first on the scene once it became clear Anzhi were looking to offload players. The fee for Willian is 35 million euros which works out at 30 million pounds and now it appears a straight shoot out between Spurs and Liverpool to agree personal terms with the player. Jason Burt writes in the Daily Telegraph: “Willian has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League and Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas also tried to sign the 25-year-old when he was the manager of Chelsea… While Liverpool would still appear to be favourites to sign Willian, Spurs have now made their move and the attraction of playing for Villas-Boas and also living in London could sway the player’s thinking.” Gary Jacob and Tony Barrett confirm in The Times that Willian will make his decision today and also hint the player could be swayed by Tottenham’s long standing interest, going back to his time at Shakhtar Donetsk last season. The Times report (which can be seen below) adds that “Liverpool have been cautiously optimistic about the possibility of signing Willian.”
