Castrol Power 1 has been powering biking across various platforms since years. For biking enthusiasts, Castrol Power 1 resonates with the hearts and minds of passionate bikers who love the thrill of riding, be it through developing technologically advanced engine oils; through extending support to the passionate bikers by providing them opportunity, reason and resources to accomplish their dream rides; or through campaigns/activities that support and encourage safe and fun riding.
Two such campaigns were unleashed by Castrol Power 1 a few days ago over the various social media platforms such as Facebook and twitter as well as the xBhp platform. In both of these campaigns, the final prize was a visit to the Sepang circuit in Malaysia to watch motoGP with none other than John Abraham and also a chance to interact with Team San Carlo Honda Gresini riders, Alvaro Bautista and Michele Pirro.

The first campaign that was introduced was the Castrol Power1 Power Bikers in association with xBhp. To be a ‘Power Biker’ meant that we put the power of ride in the hands of the biker and let them chose the journey and destination of their choice. The entire ‘Power Biker’ activity took place on-line both on the Castrol biking Facebook page and on the xBhp portal. Together we reached out to our community of over 3,50,000 bikers to submit their road-trip stories as a way to proclaim their love for the highways of India. With hundreds of bikers participating with their entries, the first level of filtering by online voting and by a joint team of experts from Castrol Biking and xBhp left us with 25 travel stories who fought the last battle to be one among 9 soon to be Power Bikers. The final 9 Power Bikers were then given a chance to go on a roadtrip of their dreams, which was powered by Castrol Power both mechanically and financially.
The final winner was to be chosen from these 9 finalists on the basis of the travelogues from the ride they overtook as Power Bikers, and Vir Nakai from Mumbai emerged as the chosen one. You can read the travelogues from all these Power Bikers in the current and upcoming issues of the xBhp magazine.

The second campaign unleashed was the Ride to motoGP with Castrol Power 1 where we tried to find out how passionate the bikers of India can be if they want to watch the motoGP at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. So the participants had to answer just one simple question, “What would you do to ride to motoGP?” and they had to show their passion for biking either through a photograph or a video. And the tremendous response we got for this contest proved once again that we had no shortage of passion for motorcycling in India. Mayur Mahanta aka Hiranmoy from Assam and Rohit Giri from Bangalore.

So, on the D-day, i.e., on Friday, October 19, 2012, these 3 guys were flown in by Castrol Power 1 from their respective places to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to experience the motoGP. As all the motoGP related activities were lined up for the Saturday and Sunday, they chose to explore the KL city and were taken on a bus for city tour, visiting Kings Place, the famous Petronas twin towers, and the chocolate factory, Cocoa Boutique. The city tour culminated with a lavish dinner at revolving restaurant Atmosphere 360 atop the KL Tower, one of the tallest TV towers in the world.

The Saturday started with a one-hour bus ride to Sepang from KL. At SIC, the atmosphere was electrifying. Kawasaki, KTM, MV Augusta, Honda, Yamaha – all the big and small bike manufacturers and bike accessories and riding gear makers had put up their stalls there, making this place nothing short of a heaven for the bikers. There were bikers all around, dancing to the music being played at these stalls and also getting themselves clicked with the gorgeous pit girls there.

Once inside the main entrance, we were taken on a Team San Carlo Gresini Honda garage tour where they got a chance to interact with Mr. Carlo Merlini, Sales & Marketing Manager, who explained the nitty-gritty’s of running a motoGP Team and also a lot of technical details. We also got a chance to see the other bikes teams’ bikes before they were being prepared for the qualifying race. John Abraham, the biking icon of India, later also joined the group for the garage tour.

After the lunch break, the lucky winners went on to watch the qualifying race from the Grand Stand with John where Rohit Giri, who is a racer himself and has raced on the Sepang track multiple times and has been a Malaysian Super Series runner up, was explaining him the technicalities of the race and the Sepang track in particular.

After the qualifying race, we were taken for an interaction with the Team San Carlo Honda Gresini motoGP riders, Alvaro Bautista and Michele Pirro who were kind enough to meet these passionate bikers despite having a tough race weekend and answer all the questions they had about motoGP and biking and also posing with them and signing autograph for everybody.
On the final race day, i.e., Sunday, October, 21, 2012, it seemed like all roads in Malaysia were leading to Sepang. There was a kilometers long traffic jam on the final stretch before the race circuit but thankfully we had started much earlier so were not really late for the race. Despite being a blistering hot morning, the entire area was jam packed with buses, cars, motorcycles and everything in between. In the motorcycle parking lot, there were more superbikes than probably we have in our country. There were rider groups coming from neighboring countries like Singapore and Thailand. The atmosphere inside was even more electrifying. The atmosphere was filled with energy. You could hear a few bollywood songs being played at some stalls, mostly Shahrukh ones.
The spectators were shouting and cheering up their favorite riders, but the 2 riders who ruled the entire scene were The Doctor and late Marco Simoncelli. They were everywhere, on the tees, stickers, pamphlets, graffiti, hoardings, helmets – EVERYWHERE. There was one other rider who was the local favorite - Muhammad Zulfahmi Khairuddin. He is a Malaysian rider and races in the moto3 category. He finished second in this Malaysian GP. The roar of the crowd when he was on the podium was deafening.

After a 20 minute delay due to bad weather, finally came the moment we were all waiting for, the motoGP category – the clash of the titans. Rossi, Stoner, Pedrosa, Lorenz – all the greats of the game were there in their battle suits. People were watching with their jaws dropped when the rain gods again played the spoilsport and the race had to be stopped midway as it was pouring and was dangerous to keep the race going. Dani Pedrosa was declared the winner followed by Lorenzo and Stone at the second and third position respectively in the rain affected race. Bautista finished 6th while his teammate Pirro was at the 12th position.
