ABC has just given new seasons to two of its freshman and three of its veteran series.
Announced officially by the network, “Agents of SHIELD,” “Designated Survivor,” “Once Upon a Time,” “Black-ish,” and “American Housewife” will all be returning for new seasons in 2017-18.
Hailing from “Lost” writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, “Once Upon a Time” is the longest-running series of the five, and with this renewal, guarantees that it will run for at least seven seasons, even despite the series being down from both of its previous seasons in the ratings.
Star Jennifer Morrison had previously announced that the sixth season would be her last on “Once.” Several other cast members may also depart as the show is reportedly headed for a creative overhaul.
“Agents of SHIELD” is currently in the process of wrapping up its fourth season, which saw the series move to a later timeslot on Tuesday nights. As a result, the series has been down from the 1.2 rating it averaged in Season 3, coming in at a 0.7 among adults 18-49. While those numbers left the series’ fate in a relatively mysterious position, with the Marvel brand name recognition and the consistently positive critical backing, this renewal comes as little surprise.
The “Black-ish” renewal is one of the most obvious of them all. Along with being one of the network’s highest-rated sitcoms — averaging a 2.5 rating in Live +7 ratings this season — the series has been a consistent awards contender year in and year out in a way that few of the other ABC sitcoms have since “Modern Family’s” Emmy streak ended a few years ago.
Meanwhile, both “Designated Survivor” and “American Housewife” have proven to be freshman hits for ABC. Premiering back in September, “Survivor” marked the return of star Kiefer Sutherland to primetime TV, and despite dropping steadily over the course of its first season, has remained a solid ratings performer for the network at 1.3 among adults 18-49. It’s ABC’s only first-year drama to survive the season.
“American Housewife,” in addition to being met with mostly positive critical reviews, has been averaging a 1.5 rating.
