Some volatility is good: Yusli
By Adeline Paul Raj

July 31 2007

BURSA Malaysia Bhd's chief moved to calm investors' nerves yesterday after global markets were spooked by a sharp drop on Wall Street late last week.

The local stock market regained some composure yesterday and most other markets have since rebounded as well.

"We're quite positive on the market situation now. (Despite recent outflows), I think the money is still in the system.

"It's good for us that there's some volatility as it creates trading opportunities," said Datuk Yusli Mohamed Yusoff.

The local benchmark, the Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI), had slipped by 26.12 points to 1,355.38 on Friday, the most drastic single-day drop in about five months.

It was part of a global sell-off triggered by a sharp drop in US markets, on fears that a weakening housing market would shake the American economy further and affect others.

Yesterday, trading on the local front was volatile, with the KLCI dropping as much 11.65 points, then posting gains of as much as 4.54 points in the afternoon.

It, however, ended the day lower by 2.97 points to 1,352.41. Some 563 counters rose, 358 fell and 234 were unchanged.

"For the short term, I think we're still looking at a correction phase. We're waiting for more clues from the US market," said TA Securities' head of research Kaladher Govindan. He believes the KLCI may fall to 1,335 in its first phase of correction, before slipping further to 1,320 by as early as this week.

Yusli warned investors yet again to focus on fundamentals when making investments.

"I would like to say to investors: focus on the fundamentals. Whether you're a near-term, mid-term or long-term investor, look at the fundamentals of the company and invest in those that you believe meet your investment horizons," he told reporters on the sidelines of an event yesterday.

Meanwhile, to keep Malaysia competitive in the palm oil trading business, Bursa Malaysia plans to launch dollar-denominated crude palm oil (CPO) futures contracts in September or October.

"We're quite hopeful that it will complement our ringgit contract, especially for international investors who prefer to trade in the US currency," he said.

Just last month, a joint venture between the Chicago Board of Trade and the Singapore Exchange launched a similar contract on the Joint Asian Derivatives Exchange.

Yusli expects that it will take some time for investors to get used to dollar contracts, but given the huge interest in CPO of late, he is hopeful that the response will be good.

"If we can get a percentage of the volume of the ringgit contract, we will be happy with that," he remarked.

Bursa has also been trying to expand the coverage of its CPO futures contract to India, Indonesia and Thailand, he said.

Bursa plans to introduce Direct Market Access (DMA) for derivatives in "the next two or three months". DMA is a zero-touch electronic trading solution that enables real-time execution of trade orders.

"This will be good for expanding our derivatives business. We will do the same for equities, which we're targeting for probably middle of next year," said Yusli.

波動中存投資機會 交易所仍唱好馬股

- Tuesday, July 31, 2007

09-08-2007: Bursa to launch DMA, US dollar-based CPO futures
by Tamimi Omar

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd will launch its direct market access (DMA) for all derivative products and US dollar-denominated crude palm oil (CPO) futures in October.

“We are still working on the final touches for both products, and we hope to be able to attract big overseas investors to our shores,” said its chief executive officer Datuk Yusli Mohamed Yusoff.

Speaking to reporters after the launch of Bursa Malaysia’s 50th Merdeka Celebration programme here yesterday, he said the launch dates of both products would be very close to each other.

Yusli said the DMA would result in less brokerage fees as trading would be carried out directly via a website, adding that it would also help raise trading volume on the exchange.

“The DMA is a more advanced version of online trading. It allows investors to buy and sell (shares) directly (on the derivatives market),” he said.

On Bursa Malaysia’s 50th Merdeka Celebration programme, Yusli said it was part of the bourse’s month-long celebration of the country’s independence.

Yusli added that Bursa would launch a roadshow for retail investors by the end of this month to educate retail investors on the functions of the stock exchange.

“We want to reach out to the younger generation and teach them about the stock market. This will be a long-term programme,” he said.

Meanwhile, Yusli said Bursa was targeting to raise up to RM2 million from The Edge-Bursa Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Rat Race next year.

The event, which took place on Tuesday, raised RM1.55 million this year.

He said the annual event had attracted a lot of attention from both local and international corporations but added that it needed more exposure.

Yusli: Now's the time to buy stocks
By Chong Pooi Koon

August 9 2007

NOW is the time for investors to buy stocks with good value before they rebound when the market regains its momentumlater, says the chief of the local bourse.

"Quite a number of stocks have fallen off their highs this year. Investors should look at the fundamentally strong ones which have pulled back more than they should," Bursa Malaysia Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Yusli Mohamed Yusoff said.

"Many business are also not affected by what happened in the US, like oil and gas," he said.

"It's difficult to buy at the lowest, but at least, you know you are not buying at the highest," he added.

Yusli said the domestic market, which fell to a four-month low this week, is volatile as investor confidence is shaken.

However, he is confident that the market will continue to rise when the dust has settled because the economic fundamentals of Malaysia as well as Asia are strong.

Even the US economy is not in a bad state."It was in the news, as the Federal Reserve was saying that the US economy is actually expected to grow. We hope the statistics coming outfrom the US will calm the market in the next few weeks, allowing it to regain momentum," Yusli said.

He said the local market needs to stabilise before long-term investors return.

Exactly when the market will stabilise and resume its uptrend is a matter of confidence, he told reporters during a monorail ride to mark the start of the company's campaign to celebrate the country's 50th year of independence.

Bursa can double daily turnover in five years: CEO

August 17 2007

SINGAPORE: Stock exchange operator Bursa Malaysia Bhd will weather the storm in financial markets and aims to more than double daily turnover within five years, its chief executive officer (CEO) said yesterday.

The Malaysian market fell more than three per cent in the morning session, in line with a rout of regional markets, but CEO Datuk Yusli Mohamed Yusoff said that in the longer term, the exchange would grow volumes through new trading technology.

Bursa Malaysia is spending heavily to update equities and derivatives trading platforms and plans to adopt soon a new automated-trading system that it says will cut transaction times to milliseconds and lead to narrower spreads quoted by brokers.

"We should be looking at doubling," Yusli said, adding that Bursa Malaysia should be aiming to boost daily turnover to around RM5 billion, compared with RM2 billion to RM3 billion in recent weeks.

"So within five years, that should be our target." Yusli said that in the first half of this year, the market's velocity - a key measure of healthy volume and liquidity - had almost doubled to about 62 per cent. Velocity is annualised turnover as a percentage of a market's total valuation.

He added that growth in turnover translated directly into profits because Bursa Malaysia's costs were largely fixed.

"It could be quite huge," he said when asked about the profit implications of RM5 billion in daily turnover.

"We have very high operating leverage in our business and, after the break-even point, every sen (of revenue) goes straight to the bottom line. We can do it (RM5 billion) with our current resources." Yusli also gave an update on government plans for a RM3.5 billion exchange-traded fund (ETF) of shares in state-linked firms, saying the fund could be larger than that and may be launched by year-end for Islamic investors.

"It's currently pointing towards a possible Islamic ETF because we want to attract Islamic investors," he said.

Bursa Malaysia hopes the fund will boost liquidity and turnover in the market, where many large state-linked firms are thinly traded and held tightly by state investment agencies such as Khazanah Nasional, Permodalan Nasional Bhd and Employees Provident Fund.- Reuters

Bursa extends listing fee discounts
By Jeeva Arulampalam

August 22 2007

BURSA Malaysia Bhd is extending listing fee discounts to companies from more countries to get more foreign listings, its top official said.

In May this year, the stock exchange operator said it would give discounts only to the first 10 Vietnamese firms that plan to list in Malaysia.

Bursa Malaysia has not set a target of how many foreign listings it wants, but its focus will be firms in Southeast Asia.

"Currently, we are targeting the Asean countries, but we do not rule out other regions," Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Yusli Mohamed Yusoff said in an e-mail response to questions posed by Business Times.

The discounts cover the initial listing fee and the annual listing fee, which is valid for one year.

Yusli argued that regional companies could raise more money from an initial public offering done in Kuala Lumpur due to its better visibility among investors.

"PLCs (public-listed companies) from these countries will tend to have better valuation if listed here due to better exposure to emerging market funds. Listing in a developed market could hinder this potential.

"Also, some of these funds could have mandate issues investing in these countries," he said.

Another factor for a PLC to contend with is sovereign risk rating within its own country, which arises from transparency, compliance and regulatory issues.

Such issues could make raising funds from the respective domestic market costly.

"If the PLCs list on our exchange, they will have to conform to Malaysian standards which are at par with international standards. By doing this, their funding cost can be considerably cheaper," he said.

They would also have access to the country's developed bond market, which is one of the biggest in the region.

"Our focus is creating awareness of Bursa Malaysia as an attractive listing destination for regional companies looking to expand their businesses internationally," said Yusli.

These efforts include cross-border listing roadshows in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, recently.

"We will be doing similar activities in other Asean countries," said Yusli.

It was reported that the next stop would be Indonesia.

One challenge for Bursa Malaysia is that some perceive Malaysia as a largely domestic market compared to other regional competitors.

But Yusli begs to differ, saying that the local exchange has market width and breadth for quality investor reach.

"We currently have one of the lowest listing fees in the region and have plans to put in place attractive platforms to position ourselves as a conduit to international funds moving forward," he said.
