CIMB to close 60 branches

KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 – Malaysia's second largest lender, CIMB Bank, will close nearly 60 surplus branches this year to save up to 60 million ringgit annually, local daily The Malaysian Reserve reported on Monday.

The bank has identified the 60 banks to be closed in August, the report quoted its head of consumer sales and distribution, Sulaiman Mohd Tahir as saying.

“CIMB can save in the region of 50 to 60 million ringgit from the closing of the branches from next year onwards. And when we close the branches, we will redeploy the people.


“The group may also see the possibility of new revenue to be generated by redeploying people to other areas which has value creation in terms of new business,” he said.

The network rationalisation was prompted by the merger between CIMB and Southern Bank in 2006. – Reuters

No-pay leave? CIMB Singapore says no, thanks

SINGAPORE, April 1 — Malaysia’s CIMB may be paring costs by offering staff across the group no-pay leave but its Singapore unit isn’t biting.

“We have been expanding all our businesses here,” country head and chief executive Mak Lye Mun told BT yesterday.

“I have increased my banking staff strength by 30 per cent since last year and 10 per cent this first quarter, and I’m looking to recruit more retail bankers as our operations here continue to grow. We need more staff to compensate for the lack of branches here.”

Although it does not have QFB status, CIMB has a full banking licence here and operates two retail outlets.

The fast-growing bank is also in the process of absorbing its investment banking unit, which is currently part of its CIMB Securities unit.

Amid weakness at home in Malaysia, CIMB has asked its employees in eight countries — including Singapore — to consider taking one to six months’ unpaid leave.

But as Mak put it: “Nobody in Singapore is taking up the offer, and I can’t afford to let anyone go.”

CIMB has grown its footprint here rapidly since it took over the securities and investment banking businesses of GK Goh four years ago. It has about 900 staff at its bustling securities and investment banking businesses and about 140 at its retail banking unit.

“There is some redeployment going on in the group here, but that is to meet shortfalls in our banking side,” Mr Mak said.

In less than three years, CIMB Singapore has grown its loan portfolio to more than US$1 billion (RM3.65 billion), while its deposit base is slightly higher, thanks to aggressive savings rates.

Its 1.8 per cent per annum Sing-dollar promotional fixed-deposit savings plan has attracted substantial deposits - so much so that the rate has been cut to 1.7 per cent.

The bank is currently working with the Monetary Authority of Singapore on a scheme to recruit and employ graduates.
And Singapore is the regional headquarters of CIMB’s wholesale banking notes business.

Mr Mak, who took the helm of the group here on Jan 1, after heading the investment banking unit for several years, is committed to — and confident of — growing the business.

“We have seen deposits grow 40 per cent year on year and loan growth has been about 20 per cent,” he said. “We are in a very comfortable place and in a good position to grow further.” — Business Times Singapore

納西爾再三強調
聯昌集團不裁員

（亞庇6日訊）聯昌集團掌舵人拿督斯里納西爾，今日第三度強調不會裁員！

他今日說，推出名為員工恢復活力計劃（Staff Rejuvenation Programme）的無薪假計劃，主要是讓員工們休息後，更有活力工作。

也是聯昌集團總執行長的納西爾指出，該項在3月30日公佈的無薪假計劃，主要原因並非為了節省成本，而是提供機會讓3萬6000名員工拿1至6個月的無薪假。

“我已表明我們並不會裁員，尤其在現今經濟情況下。”

他說，現今艱難關頭，公司的存在對員工很重要，但生意放緩，也是員工休息與充電的良機。

“當經濟好轉後，員工可能就沒機會拿長假了。”

納西爾今日出席聯昌銀行與聯昌回教位于1 Borneo購物中心分行開幕禮後，回應記者﹔列席者包括沙巴首席部長兼州財長拿督斯里慕沙阿曼。

慕沙阿曼較早前呼籲財務機構應在全球經濟走軟時支持客戶。

他說，財政部門應從危機中學習，並隨機應變。

（吉隆坡6日讯）为了配合业务网络重计划，联昌国际银行计划在今年关闭接近60家多余的分行，预料可按年节省6000万令吉。

该银行消费者销售与分销主管苏莱曼披露，该银行已确认了会在今年8月份关闭的60间分行。

“但与此同时，我们计划于今年在新区开设10间分行。因此，在截至年杪，我们会有大约320间分行，依然可为客户提供服务。”

“联昌国际在关闭了60间分行后，就可从明年起节省5000万至6000万令吉。当我们关闭这些分行时，我们将会重新调动员工。”

重新调动人手

他续说：“我们或可通过重新调动人手至其他地区，而取得一些新收入来源。”

苏莱曼向《The Malaysian Reserve》披露，联昌国际银行计划关闭那些坐落在毗邻地区，例如在同一条街道，有超过1间的分行。

他指出，自联昌国际银行与南方银行于2006年进行合并后，就已开始进行业务网络重组计划。

他透露，在完成有关合并活动后，联昌国际银行的分行一度高达390间，而且许多分行还是坐落在同一地区。

尽管如此，该银行还是会继续在一些较少设立分行的地区，包括沙巴州（或在今年开设3间分行）以及一些巴生谷地区，拓展其业务版图。

苏莱曼说：“我们一度拥有400间分行，所以自从与南方银行合并后，我们开始在2006年关闭了16间分行，并在翌年额外关闭17间。”

“我们在与南方银行合并初期，并不想将其分行关闭，因为我们不想失去他们的客户，这是我们需优先考虑的事。”

“但现在联昌国际银行的品牌已经日益强大，可以在无需顾虑失去客户的前景下，关闭一些南方银行的旧分行。”

苏莱曼还指出，联昌国际银行发现，在某些地区，根本就不需要银行的存在，只需一些自动出纳机（ATM）以及现金与支票存款机就足够了。

有鉴于此，自2008年起，联昌国际银行共投资了6000万令吉，来配置1500架提款机。目前该银行共有3100架提款机。
