PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian doubles pairs will be looking at capitalising on the absence of top pairs from China, Denmark and Indonesia in the Thailand Open, which will be played in Bangkok from July 3-8.
China's world number one Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun and Indonesia's top pair of Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan have not entered for the tournament, which is not part of the Super Series.
Golden opportunity: National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky will be looking at Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari (right) and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and other pairs to provide the cheers for the Malaysian team in Bangkok.
The entire Danish team, including the top doubles pair of Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen, are giving the tournament a miss.
All-England champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong are also out but Malaysia will still have a strong presence.
Five national pairs – Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui, Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock and Chan Chong Ming-Hoon Thien How – will be taking part along with six junior pairs from the Project 2010-2012 and Bukit Jalil Sports School squads.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong have been struggling with their form of late and doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky has opted to give them more quality training at home.
Rexy believes that Malaysia can still count on winning performances from the other pairs but they are wary of the Korean challenges.
“Wan Wah-Tan Fook should be the second seeds and I hope they will justify their billing.
“They are now ranked fourth in the world and I hope they can maintain their form going into the World Championships (in August),” he said.
“They are doing well in training and I hope they will make it to the final.”
He is counting on the others, among them Fairuzizuan-Zakry and Bin Shen-Soon Hock, to spring surprises.
South Korea will have doubles specialist Lee Yong-dae pairing up with Jung Jae-sung after missing the last two Super Series tournaments in Singapore and Indonesia last month because of a finger injury. South Korea have a second pair in the fray – Lee Jae-jin-Hwang Ji-man.
Yong-dae-Jae-sung won the Thai Open last year beating their compatriots in the final.
“We have had finalists in almost all the Open meets we have participated in this year. I hope one of the pairs will keep up this good record,” said Rexy.
In the absence of Lee Chong Wei and Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Wong Choong Hann will lead the Malaysian challenge in the men's singles.
World number one Lin Dan and compatriot Bao Chunlai and Indonesia's Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat are skipping the tournament.
World number two Chen Jin will carry the Chinese challenge together with Chen Yu and Chen Hong.
